- write their sentences why many people want to learn English;
- express their opinions on the topic “Learning English” and reasons of studying it;
- match English-speaking countries and their flags;
- name English-speaking countries and their capitals;
- find out what they should do to improve their English.
0. Beginning of the lesson
Teacher: Hallo, students! I am glad to see you!
Students: Hallo, dear teacher! We are glad to see you, too!
Teacher: What do you know about wise men?
Student 1: Wise men say that people like to build walls, not bridges.
Teacher: Yes, you are right. Their languages are also walls separating them. Let’s try to turn English into a bridge, not a wall. Look at our map! (Supplement) What is the name of it?
Student 2: The top- secret of learning English.
Teacher: Right! Today we shall find out what the top-secret of learning English is. The map on the blackboard will help us. We should follow the numbers of the map and do the tasks. Let’s start our traveling.
1. Ordering WH-questions about English and answering them
The first stop is called “WH-questions about English”. You can see them on the blackboard. They are not in the right order. Write the numbers above the words according to their correct order. Work in two groups. The name of the first will be “Clever boys and girls” and the name of the second - “Hard students”.

Teacher: Great! You know how to make WH- questions very well. Let’s answer them.
Student 1: Many people want to learn English.
Student 2: Many people want to read English books in the original.
Student 3: Very many people want to speak English.
Student 4: People in Russia want to learn English because it is necessary to learn foreign languages.
2. Completing the incomplete sentence “Many people want…”
Teacher: There are many people in different countries who want to learn English. Why do they do it? The second stop is called “Many people want…” Work in two groups and write as many sentences as you can about English. You will get one point for each correct one.
(Students write their sentences)
For example:
Many people want to speak English well.
Many people want to travel.
Many people want to read English books in the original.
Many people want to visit English-speaking countries.
Many people want to listen to English songs and sing them.
Many people want to speak to English and American people and understand them.
Many people want to watch English and American movies and understand them.
Many people want to see and understand advertisements, signboards names in the streets in English etc.
Teacher: Choose a reporter from your group and read your sentences. (Student 1 read the sentences of his team and then Student 2 does it).
3. Expressing students’ views on their reasons of learning English
Teacher: The next stop is called “First of all,…Besides,.. At last,… ”. Tell three sentences about your reasons of learning English.
Student 1: First of all, I want to learn English because I want to know it very well. Besides, I want to read English books in the original and understand them. At last, I want to enter the Institute of foreign languages and work as an interpreter.
Student 2: First of all, I want to learn English because I want to watch English movies and understand them. Besides, I want to go to England. At last, I want to see all top attractions of London.
Student 3: First of all, I want to learn English because I want to get a good job.
Besides, I want to earn a lot of money and help poor people. At last, I want to go to America and speak to American people there.
Student 4: First of all, I want to learn English because I want to be an English teacher. Besides, I want to listen to English songs and understand them. At last, I want to sing songs in English.
Teacher: Work in pairs. Tell your partner about your reasons of learning English.
4. Matching English-speaking countries and their flags.
Teacher: You said sentences about English – speaking countries. Our next stop is called “English-speaking countries” as well.
Look at the blackboard. You can see some flags on the right and the names of the countries where people speak English on the left. Match the first and the second ones. Each group will get one point for the right answer. (Students can see the flags without any names of the countries under them)

5. Recognising the main idea in the text (listening to the text about the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland)
Teacher: How well you know countries and their flags! Listen to the cassette now. Say what English-speaking country it is about.
Student: It is about the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
6. Answering questions about English- speaking countries and their capitals.
Teacher: What is the capital of it?
Student 1 (group 1): The capital of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is London.
Teacher: What is the capital of England?
Student 2 (group 2): The capital of England is London, too.
Teacher: What is the capital of Scotland?
Student 3 (group 1): The capital of Wales is Cardiff.
Teacher: What is the capital of Australia?
Student 4 (group 2): The capital of Australia is Canberra.
Teacher: What is the capital of New Zealand?
Student 5(group 1): The capital of New Zealand is Wellington.
Teacher: What is the capital of Canada?
Student 6(group 2): The capital of Canada is Vancouver.
Teacher: What is the capital of Northern Ireland?
Student 7(group 1): The capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast.
7. Completing the “Song about students” (Fill in the gaps)
Teacher: Now I know your reasons of learning English. Some of the students enjoy learning it because they want to listen to English songs and understand them. Look at the map. Our next stop is called “An English song”. Look at the blackboard. Let’s fill in the blanks with the words from the table.

9. Expressing individual students’ views on their ways of improvement English.

10. Finishing of the lesson
