GL: Good morning!
D: Good morning! Can I help you?
GL: We are in London for the first time. What could you suggest?
D: I can suggest a double-decker bus tour about London and a boat tour along the Thames. Which of these do you prefer?
GL: I think we’ll go on boat tour.
D: Here you can see some leaflets about the most famous London sights.
GL: Thanks a lot.
G1: Dear guests! You are welcome on board. As you know, London is the capital of Great Britain. It is a very old city. It’s about two thousand years old. Now London is a big port and a beautiful city with large squares and parks. About seven million people live here. The Thames is not long river. It’s three hundred and thirty kilometers long. The English people call it “The Father of London”
G2: And now we start our tour from Tower Bridge. The road over the bridge is built on two central sections; they open two or three times a week to let ships through. On the right bank of river you can see the Tower of London. It is nine hundred years old. In the early days of history of England the English kings lived here. Then it was a prison and now it is a museum. The walls of the Tower are five meters thick. In the museum you can see many old guns.
G3: Now we are coming to London Bridge. It is two thousand years old. There were houses and shops on it and people paid money when they crossed the bridge. In 1960 the people of London wanted to build a large new bridge at this place. A very rich American bought the old London Bridge. The American brought the parts of the bridge on a ship to Arizona in the USA.
C: Excuse me. I’ve got a question. Why did that rich American buy the old London Bridge?
G3: He wanted to show it to people for money.
C: Thanks a lot.
G4: And now we can visit St. Paul’s Cathedral. It was created by England’s greatest architect Sir Christopher Wren. The Cathedral was begun in 1675 and was finished only in 1710.
G5: And now we are making our tour up the Thames to the House of Parliament. It is the seat of British government. There is the Clock Tower and the clock in the House of Parliament. The Clock Tower is 318 feet high. The man in charge of building was Sir Benjamin Hall. The man was very tall and the workers and his friends called him Big Ben. So they called the bell Big Ben too.
G1: Dear guests! Our tour is over. I hope you liked it. And now we can start our bus tour.
But if you are hungry we can go to a cafe to have lunch.
C: Oh, it would be best.
Waiter: Can I help you?
RT1: Could you show us the menu, please?
W: Certainly. Here it is. Are you ready to order?
RT2: Yes, we have fish and chips and two ice-creams, please.
W: What will you have to drink?
RT1: I’ll have apple juice.
RT2: And I’ll have coffee, please.
W: Here is your bill, please.
RT1: Thank you. Goodbye.
G6: Now we are coming to Trafalgar Square. It commemorates Nelson’s victory at the battle of Trafalgar. There is a Nelson’s column in the center of square. It is over 170 feet high. The statue shows Nelson with one hand and one eye. He lost them in the battle. The four bronze lions at the base were added in 1867.
C: Excuse me, what do the lions symbolize?
G6: They symbolize four Nelson’s victories.
C: Thanks a lot.
G7: On the north side of Trafalgar Square there is the National gallery. It houses one of the finest art collections in the world. It includes paintings of the British, Italian, French, Dutch and other famous schools.
G8: There are a lot of parks and gardens in London. In Regent’s park there is London Zoo.
Today there are more than 8000 animals in the Zoo.
C: Which animals are the biggest in the Zoo?
G8: The biggest animals are giraffes, elephants and rhinos.
Т: What birds live in the Zoo?
G8: There are parrots, pelicans, ducks, eagles and many others.
C: Thank you.
G1: We are coming now to Westminster Abbey. It is a royal church. Here you can see the tombs of many British kings and queens and other famous people. The Abbey was founded in the 11th century.
G2: Now we are at Buckingham Palace. It is the London home of the queen. When the flag is flying on the top she is at home. The ceremony of the Changing of the Guard is a great tourist attraction. It takes place daily at half past twelve in the afternoon and lasts half an hour.
C: How many rooms are there in the Palace?
G2: There are 600 rooms.
C: Does the Queen’s family live at the Palace?
G2: They stay at the Palace on weekdays.
C: Thank you.
G3: We are coming now to Hide Park. It is the largest park in the West End of London. The park has Speaker’s Corner where anyone can make a speech about anything they want. It is a very democratic park.
G4: I welcome you to the British Museum. The British Museum has one of the largest libraries in the world. There are more than 6 million books in the library. At present the library has modern electronic equipment, so the reader does not have to wait long to receive the material he needs.
G5: Unfortunately our tour has finished. I hope that you enjoyed our tour of London. Thank you and goodbye.
RT1: Excuse me. Could I phone to Russia?
G5: Yes, certainly. You can use this telephone.
RT1: Hello, Mum! We are in London now. We have visited many interesting places here: the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, the British Museum, Trafalgar Square, Westminster Abbey and others. It was very interesting. I’ll tell you more at home. Goodbye.
