Предлагаемая серия уроков – попытка показать технологию работы над функциональным языком в рамках темы “Музыка”. В уроки включены интересные тексты и упражнения, максимально подходящие для работы в классе с учащимися уровня pre-intermediate.

MUSIC

Objectives: by the end of the series of the lessons the students will be able to express/give their opinion about types of music

LONGFELLOW: “MUSIC IS THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE OF MANKIND.”

1. What musical genres do you know? Add more words to the lists.

  • Types of music: jazz
  • Instruments: guitar (cello violin piano saxophone drums flute trumpet)
  • People in music: singer (conductor –дирижер musician solo artist)
  • Musical equipment: CD player ( cassette/tape recorder CD/ compact disc headphones- record stereo walkman)
  • Musical groups: orchestra ( choir group/band)

5. Look at the pictures on the collage. Which singers do you know? Match the names with the pictures.

6. Write a description of music style/ singers / bands linking the extra info with who(people), which(thing), where.

Ex. Pavarotti, who is an opera singer, lives in Italy.

7. Our journalist interviewed Matt Black who is a great Kylie Minogue fan. His favourite track is Confide In Me. Turn this fictitious negative review into the fantastic one that Matt gave it by changing the underlined words and phrases to their opposites or to more positive words and phrases which appear in the box below.

8. Study the following text and say what music means to you.

MUSIC

People can’t live without music. They listen to music, they dance to music, they learn to play musical instruments. But what is music? It’s an art which reflects life, ideas, emotions. When speaking about different types of music I’d like to mention first classical music. I prefer different musical genres: symphony, opera, ballet. Classical music gives me delight and pleasure. It addresses both our senses and intellect. As for me I prefer musical pieces by Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin.

Young people are gravitating to new rhythms such as… The voice of new groups is clear. They sing about the things which are important in our life. About 99% of pop songs are about love. Some old songs by the “Beatles” are still popular.

Folk songs are very melodious. They are hundred years old. Nobody knows who composed them.

  • it gives the listeners delight and pleasure;
  • it creates a special spiritual world for the listener which enriches his inner life and makes him happy.

AGAINST

  • it’s a complicated art, an exclusive art: most people don’t like or understand it. It’s not a popular art.
  • Very long pieces that any listener can fell asleep.
  • People want to dance to music or just talk to friends. It should be simple, cheerful and up-to-date.

FOR OR AGAINST POP MUSIC

  • Young people are gravitating to new rhythms and new styles.
  • New rhythms are full of vigour(живой, энергичный) and force. The tunes (мелодия) are happy and easily caught (запомнить).
  • The words are about hopes, dreams, disappointments and joys. It attracts a lot of young people.

AGAINST

  • The rhythms are new and vigorous but monotonous.
  • The tunes are primitive, the lyrics are senseless (бессмысленный, глупый).
  • Mass hysteria is usual at pop concerts.
