Ход урока
I.The beginning of the lesson
a) greeting
b) topic: As you know, the topic of our lesson is “The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”, but today we have an unusual lesson, it’s a conference, which takes place in Scotland. Imagine that I’m a chairperson of the conference and you are the delegations from 4 countries of the UK. So, let’s start speaking about these countries.
II.Warm-up
First of all let’s describe the whole country. I’d like you to answer my questions (Режим: Т-S1,S2...):
- Where does the United Kingdom lie?
- What are the 4 parts of the UK? (показать на карте)
- How is the flag of the UK called? Why?
- What kind of country is it from the political point of view?
- Who is the Head of State now?
- What’s her name?
III. Listening
(видеоролик, записанный ранее с учеником 11-го класса, играющим роль репортера)
Т: 3 days ago I received a video report concerning the life of the Queen. Please, listen to it attentively and then answer 4 questions (ex.1 в распечатках):
The report:
Hello. As you’ve asked, now some information about Queen Elizabeth II.
Elizabeth II’s full name is Elizabeth Alexandra Mary. She was born on June 20, 1926. She is the elder daughter of King George VI. She never went to school and was taught by home tutors.
In 1947 she married Prince Philip, her distant relative. Later he was created Duke of Edinburgh. They’ve got 3 sons, Charles, Andrew and Edward and a daughter, Anne.
Elizabeth succeeded to the throne on the death of her father in February, 1952. She was only 26 years old.
Queen Elizabeth is very popular and much respected all over the world. She is one of the richest people in the world. She acts as a patroness for a number of charities and other organizations.
The Queen is also the head of the Church of England and the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces. Her face is on all British bank notes, coins and postage stamps.
Being Queen is really a busy job. Elizabeth II gets up early and begins her day by looking through the newspapers. Then she reads letters from the public (she gets more than 1000 each week), and tells her staff how she would like them to answer. The Queen has daily meetings with her Private Secretary who helps her to go through her paperwork, and lots of other meetings. In the afternoon Elizabeth II often goes out on public engagements – she gets thousands of invitations each year. She opens hospitals, bridges and factories. Once a week the Queen has a meeting with the Prime Minister and they discuss government business and important things that are happening in the country. Being Queen is not a 9 to 5 job, Elizabeth II has to work from early in the morning till late at night. And people watch her all the time.
Of course, she has some free time, and some private life, but less than most people. In her spare time she enjoys horse racing, fishing and walking in the countryside. She also enjoys photography and likes taking photos on her travels.
That’s all for today. Thank you. Good-bye.
The questions (ex.1):
- When was Elizabeth II born?
- .How many children has she got?
- What does she look through and read in the morning?
- What does the Queen enjoy doing in her spare time?
T: Now listen to the report once more and then say if the statements given to you are true or false. Correct the false ones (ex.2 в распечатках):
- Elizabeth II’s full name is Elizabeth Victoria Mary.
- Prince Philip is Duke of Cardiff.
- She became the Queen at the age of 26.
- The Queen is the head of the Church of England and the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces.
- In the afternoon Elizabeth II often goes to shops and cafes.
- Once a week the Queen has a meeting with the Prime Minister.
IV. Speaking
T: I see that you know much about the Queen. And now I’d like you to tell us about your countries. I want 4 representatives to come out and do it.
Please, tell us briefly about the countries: just what your country is, where it lies, describe the emblem and the flag and name the capital. The other delegates listen to them and ask some more questions. (Представители выступают, демонстрируют плакаты, картинки, учащиеся слушают и задают дополнительные вопросы, используя клише: Could I ask you a question, please? Would you be so polite…? Excuse me, …? Would you mind…? и т.п.)
V. Reading
T: Now we know almost everything about England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Our authorities have a task for you. We have some information about the countries, but aren’t sure what countries are described. Please, read the information and guess.
(каждой делегации предлагается по 2 текста из 5-8 предложений, где затрагиваются отдельные аспекты обсуждаемых стран, но нет самого названия. Учащиеся должны догадаться, о какой из стран идет речь в том или ином тексте)
VI. Conclusion
- a) asking for the opinion about the conference
- b) song
T: Thank you for the work very much. As for me, I think the conference was interesting and rather informative. And as it takes place in Scotland, let’s finish it with one of the best Scottish songs “My Bonnie”.
- c) results of the lesson, marks, home task, saying good-bye
