I. Hello my dear friends! I’m glad to see you. Sit down, please. Today we have an unusual lesson - a competition “Who knows the country!” You will show us your knowledge of the UK, because our lesson is devoted to this country. We’ll speak about the sights, the capital, some interesting facts and writers. My dear friends, we’ll have several tasks at the lesson and you should do them. As for me, I have a lot of red and blue stars. For an excellent answer you’ll get a red star. For a good answer I’ll give you a blue one. The winner will be the person with the biggest number of the red stars.

II. As usual I have prepared a poem for you. Now let’s read it:

The was an old man in the South West
Who wear a pale, yellow-colored vest
When they asked: “Does it fit?”
He replied:” Not a bit!”
But that was an old man of the South West.

Now, please, tell me where the old man lived. In what country.

So, you see that we’ll speak not only about GB, but also about England.

III. The first task is questions. You should answer some of my questions.

  • Where’s the UK situated?
  • Which island is the largest one?
  • What separates GB from the Continent?
  • How many countries are there in the GB? Name them.

(give a text about London with some mistakes in the content)

VI. We’ve read and watched the cassette about the sighs of London. By the way, if you have a chance to go to London what will you visit and why?

(The pupils speak about the sighs of London)

Who is the head of the country? Who has the real power? The next task is matching the descriptions and the names of monarchs:

During his \ her reign Britain became a rich industrial country with a developed trade, an empire with a lot of colonies Queen Elizabeth II
Under her \ his Britain become independent of the Roman Catholic Church, it got richer and more powerful King Henry VIII

He/She was born in April in Windsor; was crowned in Westminster Abbey and came to the throne in 1952. Married in 1947. He/She is on the throne now Queen Elizabeth

VIII. You know, we can say that the Queen is a symbol of GB. There are also many other famous people. So, the following task for you is “Guess who it was!” You should put the passages of the story in the right order, read them and tell me what famous person this text is about.

"Guess who it was!"

1. He went to a grammar school and had quite a good education. There he learned to love reading. His school was a difficult place at that time. School days were long, and only on the holidays he could have a real rest.

2. In 1613 he stopped writing and went to live in his native town where he died in 1616. He wrote three types of plays: histories, comedies and tragedies. Four hundred years later his plays are still acted — not only in England but in the whole world.

3. While still a teenager, he married Anne Hathaway, a farmer's daughter some years older than himself. They had three children. When he was twenty-one he went to London, leaving Anne and the children at home.

4. He was one of the world's greatest writers. He was born on April 23, 1564 in England. His mother was the daughter of a farmer. His father was a glove-maker.

5. In London he began to act and to write plays and soon became an important member of a well-known acting company. He wrote plays for the famous Globe Theatre. Later he was one of the owners of the Globe Theatre.

IX. Now, my dear friends, let’s imagine that we are in GB, some of you are native citizen and some of you are foreigners. So let’s see what micro-dialogues we can hear in the streets of Great Britain.

(Children act dialogues: how to find some famous place, talk about the weather, about traditions)
