I. Introduction

Hello. Pleased to see you. How is it going on? Well, our today’s will be devoted to the discussion of some film parts. But all of these parts will be from the same film which is about love and marriage. So far that we need to revise the vocabulary on the topic.

  1. Here are some words on the board. Let’s first read them (см. приложение 1).
  2. Now will you guess which word is meant by its definition? (см. приложение 2).
  3. Here is a set of cards with a pair of phrases on each. You are to select one and explain the difference between the phrases (см. приложение 3).
  4. When you read the name of the film you can guess what the film is about.

a) Here’s a film guide. Look at some of the film titles on the collage and say what you think it’s about and what’s the type of film it is (см. приложение 4).

b)You’ve been given out the cards where a film is described. Read the short plot of it and invent your own name for the film (см. приложение 5).

II. So, that was a kind of warming up. The film for the discussion is a popular English film “Four Weddings and a Funeral”.

  1. Can you give your guesses what this film is about?
  2. What do you think is the setting of any film? Yes, it’s the time, place and circumstances in which a film takes place. It gives you a lot of information about the story. So, you are getting the worksheets with a number of questions. Look them through. As you watch the first episode, you should look for visual clues and listen for words that give information about the setting. After viewing the clip, you should answer the questions. You are also provided with cues, or viewing guides which will help you to give the answers (см. приложение 6).
  3. That was nice! The next task will be a bit more difficult. It’s silent viewing where you are going to show us your prediction abilities. The video segment will be shown without the sound. Use your powers of deduction. As I press the button “pause” at intervals to stop the picture on the screen you’ll tell us what is happening and what the characters might be saying.
  4. Great! Now, I’m going to replay the video with the sound on so that you can compare your impressions with what actually happens in the film. (см. приложение 7).
  5. Now, let’s be more specific. You are going to watch another short video clip. You’ve been distributed the sheets with the vicar’s speech at the first wedding where some of the words have been removed. While watching, please, fill in the gaps with the words from the film. …now read your version about (см. приложение 8).
  6. The saddest part of the film is a funeral of one of the characters- Gareth. His friend Matthew wrote a poem to his death. It sounds very touching. Listen to this poem. What is it about? Now you’re going to listen to it again and correct where it’s necessary the statements listed on your worksheets… Now let’s read the poem (см. приложение 9).
  7. The next task is one of the most complicated. I’ve chosen an interesting scene from the video in which the characters do not practically speak. Then in groups you are going to make up the script of this particular clip based on the visual information. Finally, again in groups you are going to role play your stories.
  8. You’ve worked hard and we came up to the last task. Again you are going to watch a film section and than in turn give the oral summary of what has happened in the clip. The key words that can help you tell the story are presented on the board.

III. Conclusion.

We’ve had many activities today. I hope they are useful and you enjoyed them. Would you like to watch the whole film now? All of you participated effectively through your active viewing. Thank you for cooperation.

IV. And your homework for the next lesson is to describe your favorite film following the plan.

  • The name, the director, the cameraman, the casting. When it was released. The type of the film.
  • The setting of the film.
  • The short summary of the film.
  • Your impressions about the film.

Приложение 5

… is the story of Jack McCall, an American expatriate in Rome, scarred by tragedy and betrayal. His desperate desire to find peace after his wife’s suicide draws him into a painful, intimate search for one haunting secret in his family’s past that can heal his anguished heart. Spanning three generations and two continents, from the ancient ruins of Rome, from the unutterable horrors of the Holocaust to the lingering trauma of Vietnam the film sings with life’s pain and glory.

Charles: It’s not achieved without real suffering.

Episode 2:

Charles: I am sorry. I’ll be killing myself after the service, if that’s any consolation.

Angus: Doesn’t matter. Tom was standing by.

Charles: Thanks, Tom. You’re a saint.

Episode 3:

Angus: You haven’t forgotten the rings?

Charles: No… Hate people being late. Hate it.

Scarlett: Oh, isn’t she lovely.

Приложение 9

Matthew’s poem at Gareth’s funeral.

Stop all the clock, cut off the telephone,

Prevent the dog from running (barking) with a juicy bone,

Silence the fiddles (pianos)

And with muffled drum

Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let the airplanes fly (circle) moaning overhead

Scribbling on the sky the message

‘He Is Alive’ (Dead).

Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves

Let traffic policemen wear black woolen (cotton) gloves

He was my North, my South, my East and West.

My working days (week) and my Sunday rest,

My morning (noon), my midnight, my talk, my song;

I thought that love would last long (for ever):

I was wrong.

Приложение 11

Carrie: Hello.

Charles: Hi! You’re soaking. Come in.

Carrie: No, I’m fine. Comes a point when you can’t get wetter.

Charles: OK. I’ll come out.

Carrie: No, please, don’t. I… I just wanted to check you’re OK. Not busy killing yourself or anything, but … I shouldn’t have come to the church this morning. I’m sorry.

Charles: No! Wait. It was all my fault. I mean, I’m the bastard here. And it sorted out one thing. Marriage and me were very clearly not meant for one another. I sorted out another big thing, too. There I was, standing there in the church, and for the first time in my whole life I realised I totally and utterly loved one person. And it wasn’t the person next to me in the veil. It’s the person standing opposite me now in the rain.

Carrie: Is it still raining? I hadn’t noticed.

Charles: The truth of it is, I’ve loved you from the first second I met you. Not going away, are you?

Carrie: No, I might drown. But otherwise, no.

Charles: OK.OK. We’ll go in. But first let me ask you one thing. Do you think, after we’ve dried off, after we spent lots more time together, you might agree not to marry me? And do you think not being married to me might, maybe, be something you could consider doing for the rest of your life? Do you?

Carrie: I do.

Key words:

soaking

to check

busy killing yourself

shouldn’t have come

my fault

sort out

standing next to/opposite

realised totally and utterly

from the first second

not to marry

consider doing for the rest of your life
