Ksyusha:Before our traveling we had known a little about the UK from the lessons of history and English. Please, Dima, remember what we had known about the UK before our traveling.
Dima: The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (the UK) occupies most of the territory of the British Isles. It consists of four main parts which are: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (показывает на карте). Their capitals are London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast.
The UK is an island state: it is composed of some 5.500 islands, large and small. The two main islands are Great Britain to the East and Ireland to the West. They are separated by the Irish Sea.
The UK is one of the world`s smaller countries (it is twice smaller than France or Spain) with an area of some 244.100 square kilometers.
The population of the United Kingdom is over 57 million people.
English is the official language of the UK, but English is not the only language which people use in the UK.
The flag of the United Kingdom, known as the Union Jack, is made up of three crosses.
The upright cross is the cross of St. George, the patron saint of England. The white dia- gonal cross is the cross of St.Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland, the diagonal cross is the cross of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.
Ksyusha: Kiran, what can you add to Dima`s information?
Kimran: Every part of the UK has got its own language, traditions, customs, emblems, flags.
The teams of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland take part in different international
competitions with their own flags (with one cross on the blue background). I like the legends about symbols of every country of the UK very much (во время рассказа показы- вает изображения символов).
The red rose has been the emblem of England since the victory of the Lancastrians in the
Wars of the Red and White Roses.
The thistle is the national emblem of Scotland. The Scots believe they won victory over the Norsemen thanks to this plant.
The daffodil is the emblem of Wales, it is closely associated with St. David`s Day, due to the belief that it flowers on that day.
The shamrock is the national emblem of the Irish. According to the legend St.Patrick used a small green shamrock as an illustration of the mystery preaching the doctrine of the Trinity to the pagan Irish.
Ksyusha: Who else?
Sasha P.: For Centuries the British have been known as snobbish, aloof, hypocritical and unsociable.
The British are said to be a polite and well-mannered people. Englishmen tend to be rather conservative, they love familiar things.
The English are practical and realistic. Everything is orderly: the lawns and the trees are neatly trimmed.
The British people are considered to be the world`s greatest tea drinkers.
Every Englishman is said to be a countryman at heart.
The English are reputed to have a good sense of humour.
Seryozha Ye.: We have learnt about some English holidays.
Seryozha Sh.: We have read books by Agatha Christie and Conan Doyle. We have known ShaKespeare, Dickens. We have seen films by these books.
Alyosha: We know a little about 10, Downing Street, Buckinghem Palace, St. Paul`s Cathedral, Tower of London, Palace of Westminster, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Trafalgar Square, Hyde Park. (Показывает иллюстрации).
Oksana: I like this interesting man John Bull. (Показывает иллюстрацию). He is the symbol of the typical Englishman. He is often drawn in cartoons and pictures about England. He wears high boots, an open jacket and a Union Jack waistcoat.
Ksyusha: И всё это мы видели собственными глазами. Что-то подтвердило наши пред ставления, что-то произвело на нас неизгладимое впечатление. А что-то оказа лось не таким, как мы себе представляли.
Some things were as we had expected. But some things were not as we had expected.
Is it true, Marina?
Marina: Tea is not the primary drink for the modern British. Nowadays, they also don`t necessary drink it at 5 0`clock. An English person would choose between tea and coffee in
the morning, tea and water at lunch, and they would have some juice with dinner. Children ask parents for a glass of Coke, young people, sharing the latest fashion for a healthy way of life, take a bottle of pure water. Tea seems to be in the shadows.
Lyuba: We had heard about rainy weather in England. But I doubt I used an umbrella in London more frequently than in Russia.
Ksyusha: Now let`s watch our film about London.
