- Чтение текста по цепочке;
- Ответы на вопросы учителя.
Struggling to define the meaning of the “New World” at the time of the American Revolution, French immigrant Michel-Guillume Jean de Crevecoeur asked the question about American nationality in his “Letters from an American Farmer” (1782):
What then is an American, this new man? He is neither a European, nor the descendent of a European, hence that strange mixture of blood, which you will find in no other country. I could point out to you a family whose grandfather was an Englishman, whose wife was a Dutch, whose son married a French woman, and whose present four sons have now four wives of different nations. He is an American, who leaving behind him all his ancient prejustices and manners, receives new ones from the mode of life he has embraced, the new government he obeys, and the new rank he holds… Here individuals of all nations are melted into a new race of people, whose labours and prosperity will one day cause great changes in the world.
New words:
a descendent - | потомок | a rank - | класс, ранг, чин, социальное положение |
prejustices - | предубеждения | to melt - | таять, растворяться |
to embrace - | принимать | prosperity - | процветание, благосостояние |
4. T: The USA is a democratic country which proclaimed its Declaration of Independence in 1776. Many people helped to write this Declaration. One of them was Benjamin Franklin. Listen to S2, he will tell us about Franklin’s life and his achievements.
Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1706. He was a son of a candle maker. Although his family was poor, he worked hard and became a printer, writer, philosopher, scientist and diplomat.
His Autobiography is probably the best-known and most widely read autobiography in the world. He wrote many quotations about how to live, such as ”When you run in debt, you give another power over your liberty.”
Every morning he asked himself “What good shall I do this day?” and every night he asked himself “What good have I done today?”
Benjamin Franklin was always interested in scientific experiments. He invented the Franklin stove, which produced more heat with less fuel. In 1752 he performed an experiment with a kite and proved the theory that lightning is a form of electricity. He then developed the lightning rod, which saved buildings from fire.
Benjamin Franklin also realized that he was an American, not an Englishman, and helped to write the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution.
After the US declared independence in 1776, Franklin lived in France. He was the US Ambassador to France during the American Revolution. He lived in France for nearly a decade. There he used his diplomacy and leadership skills and there he became the symbol of a new nation.
5. T: S2 has told us that Franklin was famous for his quotations. Let’s read and translate some of the moral virtues:
- Temperance: Eat not to dullness. Drink not to elevation.
- Silence: Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself. Avoid trifling conversation.
- Order: Let all things have their places. Let each part of your business have its time.
- Resolution: Resolve to perform what you ought. Perform without fail what you resolve.
- Industry: Lose no time. Always be employed in something useful. Cut off all unnecessary actions.
- Justice: Harm no one.
- Moderation: Avoid extremes.
6. T: Benjamin Franklin and other people who wrote the Declaration of Independence wanted the USA to be a land of free people. But in fact, for many years there was slavery in the United States. A great number of people were against it. So the American Civil War between the North and the South began. Who was the American president at that time? S3, will you tell us about Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President? (Рассказ ученика)
On February 12th ,1809 a little boy was born in the backwoods of America, in the state of Kentucky. His name was Abraham Lincoln and he lived with his parents and his sister in a hut made of logs.
Life was not easy for the Lincoln family.
In all his life Abraham never went to school for more than a year, and he had five different teachers.
When he was grown-up, Lincoln once passed a large open market-place, and there for the first time he saw Negro men, women and children who were sold as slaves to white masters. He also saw how unkindly these poor slaves were treated. At the time he said nothing, but he never forgot it and he made up his mind to help the slaves.
Later he became a lawyer. The people of Illinois made him a member of parliament. They trusted him and believed in him because he was greatly opposed to slavery. Finally the American people made him their leader, the President of the United States.
7. T: Abraham Lincoln was against slavery, he wanted the people of different races to have equal rights. But even in the 20th century there were racial problems in the USA. Of course, there were people who stood for the racial equality and world peace. One of such people was Martin Luther King. Listen to the radio programme about him and then you’ll do an exercise.

8. T: If somebody asked you to call the names of famous Americans, you would probably name popular pop singers and actors at first. And who is your favourite American singer?
Now I’d like you to listen to the talk between two friends. (S1 – S2)
S1: Who are your heroes in the world of music?
S2: Well, you know, I really like Britney Spears, her songs, the way she looks, everything.
S1: Oh, come off it! There are lots of singers who are better. Her last album wasn’t very good, was it?
S2: Well, I think she’s a really good singer.
S1: I don’t think so. If you want a real music hero, it has to be Elvis Presley. He really changed pop-music, and he’s called the “King of rock’n’roll”.
S2: OK, but he’s ancient. Who wants to listen to his music nowadays?
S1: And what about films, actors and actresses?
S2: For older generation I think, er, Clint Eastwood and Marilyn Monroe.
S1: Mm, you’re dead right about Clint Eastwood. He was brilliant.
S2: Absolutely!
S2: But there are other really good actors and actresses around today. I like Kate Winslet, George Clooney, Keanu Reeves. And even some popular singers star in the films today, Madonna, for example.
S1: That’s true. You’ve got a point there.
9. T: Now let’s sing one of Madonna’s songs.(Учащиеся исполняют песню “You’ll see”)
