Today we shall be talking about London’s places of interest.

- First of all, let’s speak about different areas of London;

  1. Name it.
  2. Try to tell only 1 sentence about it:
  • London.
  • The West End – is a world of shops, offices and theatres.
  • In the City banks and offices are concentrated, including the Royal Exchange and the Bank of England.
  • The East End is the district where working people live.

London is not only the political, economic and cultural of the U.K. It is the main tourist attraction of the country. There are a lot of places of interest in London, which attract thousands of tourists every year. They usually want to see Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London. We shall be talking about it.

a) The tower of London.

  1. The tower of London on the north bank of the Thames is one of the most ancient buildings of London.
  2. It was founded on the 11th century by William the Conqueror [‘ ]
  3. For many centuries the Tower has been a fortress, a palace, a prison and royal tresury [‘ ]
  4. The ravens whose forefathers used to find food on the Tower, still live here as part of its history.
  5. There is a legend that if the ravens disappear the Tower will fall.
  6. That is why the birds are carefully guarded.
  7. The Tower is guarded by the Yeomen Warders, popularly called “Beefeaters”.

b) Westminster Abbey.

  1. Westminster Abbey is a fine Gothic building, which stands opposite the Houses of Parlament.
  2. In the 11th century King Edward the Confessor decided to build a great abbey church there.
  3. There are many royal tombs in the Abbey, like the tomb of Edward the Confessor himself, and memorials to famous men and women.
  4. The most popular ones are those to writers, poets, and musicians on the Poet’s Corner.
  5. William the Conqueror was crowned there and cince then all the coronations have taken peace on the Abbey.
  6. During the reign of Edward the Confessor the Palace of Westminster was built, too.
  7. It was the royal residence and also the country’s main court.
  8. The Parliament met here since the 16th till the 19th century.
  9. The present Houses of Parlament were built after the fire in palace of Westminster on 1834.
