CONTINENTS AND COUNTRIES

The planet we live on is the Earth. The earth is round. If you look at the Earth from the space you will be adle to see land, seas, oceans, continents and even countries. Sometimes you can see them through clouds. They look very beautiful when the sun rises or sets.

There are four oceans and six continents. The continents are Europe, Asia, Africa, America, Australia and Antarctic. America consists of North America and South America. The continents are very large. Oceans and seas wash them from each other. There are usually many countries on the continents. For example, there are more than 40 countries in Africa, but thereis only one country in Australia. It has got the same name as the continent. Australia is a very big country, but some countries are small. Iceland is a very small country. It is situated on the island in the north of Europe. Let’ s name some countries from each continent: Russia, Great Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Italy are in Europe. Chine, India, Vietnam are in Asia. Canada and the United States are in America. Egypt is an African country.

The largest country in the world is Russia. The smallest country is the Vatican. All the countries have interesting people, places, animals and plants. People of different nationalities live in these countries. They speak different languages. Each country has national flag, anthem and its own traditions and customs.

V. English is the most wide-spread language on the Earth. People all over the world speak English. Millions of people are learning English today. Nowadays it is the language of meetings and international conferences.

... As far as I remember, Ann, English is your favourite subject!

... True. I think English is the most popular language nowadays. People speak English all over the world. In Russia and France, in Germany and Italy, in Spain and Egypt people learn language as a foreign language.

... I know they do. By the way they say that English has become an international language in the 20-th century.

... Oh! Yes, it certainly has. People will understand you practically everywhere if you speak English. In most of the countries people speak English and their native language of course.

... In what countries do people use English as their native language?

... In Great Britain, the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. These are English-speaking countries.

... So, in all these countries people speak the same language, don’t they?

Oh, no ! They don’t. People speak American English in the USA, and British English in Great Britain. Different words often name the same things.

... What does he mean?

... He means, that people live in flats in England, but they live in apartments in America.

... They eat cookies and candies in the USA, but biscuits and sweets in Great Britain.

... Children go to school in the fall in Averica, but in autumn in England.

... So, that’s very interesting!

VI. And now, representatives from different English-speaking countries, I want you to tell us about your countries.

... We live in Great Britain. The capital of our country is London. We are English and we speak English. Our flag is blue, red and white.

... The USA.

... Australia.

VII. So, your task was to prepare and ask only one question about the country they live in. If will speak about these countries we should repeat some words and word-combinations.

Заготовки со словами лежат на столе.

1.What does it mean –Washington D.C.? Some sentences about your capital , please!

Washington D.C. was founded in 1790 and was named after the first US president, George Washington. It is situated on the north bank of the Potamac River. D.C. means District of Columbia. When George Washington picked the place for the capital, he called this place of land after Christopher Columbus.

Washington is one of the most beautiful and unusual cities in the USA. It has little industry and only one million people. There are no skyskrapers because they would hide the city’s many monuments from view.

Thousands of tourists visit Washington every day. People from all parts of the United States come to see their capital and the monuments to those who in past struggled for the independenceof their country.

2. Great Britain is a country of traditions and customs. Speak about some British holidays, please.

Every nation and every country has its own traditions and customs. British people are proud of their traditions. You already know some of the English traditions and holidays. We hope you remember St, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Hallowe’en which have also become traditional American holidays.

One of the old English legends says that London can be the capital of the country, rich and great until 12 black ravens live in the Tower of London. Each has got its name and the keepers carefully look after them. If one of the birds dies, another younger raven takes its place. Londoners believe this legend and always bring some food to give to the birds when they come to the Tower. The keepers cut the birds’ wings abit as they are afraid that they may fly away.

Another old English tradition is guy Fawkes Day. Children go out into the streets on the 5th of November with figures like scarecrows. They stand in the streets and squares asking for the usual “Penny for the Guy”. Then with the money they have collected they buy fireworks and burn the guy on their bonfire.

People watch fireworks and some people go to parties in the evening.

3. Australia is an “upside-down country”. Why is it so?

Australia is “upside down” country. Winter comes inJuly and summer begins in December. During the Christmas holidays people often swim and surf in the ocean.

Australia is one of the hottest places.

It is interesting to know that Australia has an extraordinary collection of birds and animals. Many of them live only there. There are more than 40 different kinds of kangaroos in Australia. Another well-known Australia’s animal is the koala. It spends most of its life in trees and eats only the leaves of these trees. There are many other animals in Australia such as : the dingo, a wild dog, the emu, the koala and rabbits. Would you like to visit Australia?
