These lines were written by William Shakespeare, the author of one of the most famous love stories in the world - the story of Romeo and Juliet.

Now we’ll watch an episode from the film “Romeo and Juliet”. This part is without words, only feelings. I think this film helps us to feel the atmosphere of love.

Love has inspired many poets and writers. This wonderful feeling plays an important part in human life and for this very reasons it could not but be played upon in many idioms.

Some of them can be found in different languages. For example “Love is blind”. Others are specific to a certain language. Let’s look at some British and American idioms with the word “Love”.

  5. Now let’s answer some questions:
  6. What is a white wedding?

What is your opinion about the white wedding?

Would you like to have such ceremony?

Now we’ll watch the best white wedding. You can recognize the heroes of this ceremony, but the end of this beautiful story – like fairy tale was very tragic and sad.

    1. It seems to me that whatever reason people have for living together is a private matter. The state should have no say in it. If two people choose to live together, fine-it’s up to them. It concerns them and no one else. We do not register our friends should we feel it important to register our lovers.
    2. Couples need support. They need the support of other families and they need the support of society. Marriage does that. It shows couples that they don’t just have to depend on their own emotion. Obviously, young passion die down and individual interest change, but marriage help keep people together and protect their happiness. Besides, single-parent families are still not acceptable in this country.
    3. I feel there are so many advantages to living by yourself. When I get home at night after a day’s work I just love the feeling of being alone. That doesn’t mean I’m lonely. Maybe an hour later I decide I want to go out, to be with somebody. But it’s my own choice. I’m not forced upon me.

Therefore, even thought it’s expensive to live on your own, I prefer it.

Love, marriage. There are different opinions concerning marriages nowadays. Discuss the following in groups and express your opinions.

  9. What do you value in your future partner:
  10. Divide a page into 2 columns:

The left for words you associate with men,

The right for words you associate with women,

Write each word in the appropriate column according to your first reaction

Words: kind, faithful, dominant, humorous, sexy, intelligent, sociable, brainy, aggressive, independent.

    Then compare your ideas.

Marriage and choosing a partner is a very serious thing. So we should think carefully and prepare for it. We’ll watch an episode from “Family Album”. The heroes are Susan and Harry. Harry has got a daughter. His wife died. Susan is not married. So they became friends and decided to marry. Now we’ll watch their preparations for the wedding ceremony.

    Then you’ll answer my questions:

    (Вопросы можно написать на доске)

    • What is very important on this day? (Engagement rings)
    • Who is responsible for them?
    • But do you know why people use rings?

Who was the first bride to be given a diamond engagement ring?

It was Mary of Burgundy. When the Archduke Maximilian of Austria proposed to her, he was told that he had to give her a diamond ring. So he did, and from that time on – and it was the fifteenth century – diamonds have been associated with engagement rings. It still the custom in Britain and the USA for a man and woman who are going to marry to get engaged – to tell their parents, other relatives and friends, sometimes to have a party and perhaps put a notice in the newspaper. The man usually gives the woman an engagement ring.

A wedding ring is traditionally a plain ring of yellow or white gold or platinum. In Britain and the USA the wedding ring is worn on the third finger of the left hand and at the wedding ceremony is placed on the finger before the engagement ring. Only the wedding ring, not the engagement ring is sometimes engraved with the couple’s initials and the date of the wedding.

Then let’s go on watching a film.

Three things are important for a bride on this day. What are they?

    (Something old, blue and borrowed).

Why do English and American brides try to find something blue to wear for the wedding?

The bride is supposed to wear ‘something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue’ because this will bring her luck. If you borrow a piece of jewelry from your mother or a friend’s veil, the ‘old’ and ‘borrowed’ will be covered. With a dress or gloves and a blue garter you are all set. The garter may serve one more purpose. After the bouquet has been thrown, the groom removes the garter the bride wears below her knee and tosses it to his friends. The one who catches the garter is supposedly the next to get married.

Then do you know what is the English for ‘теща’ and ‘свекровь’?

What is the English for ‘теща’ and ‘свекровь ’?

The two Russian words have one English equivalent – ‘mother-in-law’. English terms for relatives through marriage are much easier and more logical than the Russian counterparts. Nowadays, few Russian native speakers know for sure who is ‘деверь’ or ‘шурин’ and what is the difference between ‘невестка’ and ‘ золовка‘. Generally speaking, the English system of family terms is easier and more logical than the Russian one. The wife’s or husband’s mother will be ‘mother-in-law’, father – ‘father-in-law’, sister – ‘sister-in-law’, etc.
