Good morning, dear students! Good morning, dear guests!

We've learnt so much about London and Londoners at our previous lessons so I think it's high time for us to have a wonderful trip around the city. There's so much to be seen in London, and tourist companies offer such a variety of tours that it's very difficult to make the right choice. It seems to be a good idea to make our own tour and you'll try to be the guides since you've already known many interesting facts about this city.  Do you agree?

Yes, we agree.

Then I invite you to a sightseeing tour of London, the city of contrast! Let's go!

Before we start our trip let's remember how many parts London consists of.

It consists of four parts: the City, the West End, Westminster and the East End. The City is the heart of London, its commercial and business part. Many banks,  offices and firms are concentrated there. Only five thousand people live in the City but over one million come there to work. We can see the Tower of London and St Paul's Cathedral in  this part of London.

That's great. What's the West End?

The West End is the richest and most beautiful part of London. Fine buildings, theatres, museums and big shops can be found in the West End. The best streets and parks of the capital are there too, such as Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, Buckingham Palace, Hyde park and many others.

You're right. And do you know what Westminster is?

Yes, Westminster is another central and important part of London. Most governmental buildings are situated there, such as the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Whitehall and Scotland Yard.

What's about the East End?

The East End is the poorest part of London. It is the most densely populated district. There are  poor houses, grey and black with smoke. Most of the working people live in the East End. All the factories, mills, workshops and docks are concentrated in the East End.

How much is the population of London?

It's over 9 million people.

But how can we get around London? What means of transport shall we use on our trip?

There're many ways to travel around London. One of them is the Underground. It's the quickest and easiest way of getting around the whole of London. Londoners call the underground the "Tube", and use it very extensively. Trains run from 05.30 to 24.00. The underground stations are conveniently located – simply look for the London Underground circular symbol in the street and you will soon find it.

We can also go by bus. There are two main kinds of buses in London: the red double-decker and the red single-decker. ( показываем иллюстрацию автобуса) Some  double-deckers in London have automatic doors, and you pay the driver when you go in. But most London buses have a conductor whom you pay after finding a seat.

Yes, traveling by bus is a good way to see sights, but I wouldn't recommend you to take the bus if you're in a hurry. There're a lot of traffic jams, the buses go very slowly and during the rush hours you may wait 40 minutes for a bus.

Another way of getting around London is a river bus. It goes along the Thames quite often and it gives the opportunity to see many sights and to enjoy the river trip.

Ok, then I suggest starting our trip with traveling along the Thames on the river bus.

Well, our first stop is the Tower of London, a mysterious and historic place. (показываем иллюстрацию Тауэра) They say that London is the key to England and the Tower is the key to London. Let's remember why this place is so famous and popular among the tourists.

(one of the students tells the group about the Tower)

Don't forget about Tower Bridge, it's the most famous of all seventeen bridges which cross the Thames. This bridge built in 1894 is still in daily use. There is a museum inside the bridge now.

Well… Let's go on our trip along the Thames. And what is the next stop?

Yes, it's St Paul's Cathedral. Everybody coming to London for the first time wants to see this place. But who was the architect and how long did it take him to build this huge and magnificent building?

(one of the students tells the group about St Paul's Cathedral)

Let's go on down the river Thames. And this is our next stop What's this?

It's the Houses of Parliament or Westminster Palace and Big Ben. It is the seat of the British Parliament.

Why is this place considered to be the most popular and widely spread image of London?

(one of the students tells the group about the Houses of Parliament)

All right. Now, look! Close by Westminster Palace on the river side stands the magnificent Westminster Abbey (показываю иллюстрацию). It's our chance to walk through England's history. Let's come in. What can we see inside the Abbey?

(one of the students tells the group about Westminster Abbey and Poet's corner)

Well, you see, we've been to the City of London and Westminster. Now it's high time to go to the West end. I think we should take a bus to Buckingham Palace… And this is the Queen's residence! (показываю иллюстрацию) It's wonderful, isn't it? Do you know why a large crowd of people gather at this place at 11.30 in the morning?

To see the famous and traditional ceremony of the Changing of the Guard.

Yes, you're right. We'll see it a bit later.  Do you know anything about Buckingham Palace itself?

Not very much…

Oh, in that case I've got a surprise for you. Our special guest will tell you about this place better than anyone else because… she lives there! Do you know who she is?

Queen Elizabeth II!

Учитель: Welcome Your Majesty!

Thank you very much, Your Majesty! Good bye! Well, now let's watch the Changing of the Guard.

I see you're a little tired. Let's have a rest. There are a lot of places in London where you can relax and enjoy the nature's beauty. These are London's parks. By the way one of them is close to Buckingham Palace. It's Hyde Park. Hyde Park is one of the most popular and most frequented points in London. It's the largest park and it has a large and most attractive lake called the Serpentine whose area is used to swim and to row on in summer. There's also Speaker's Corner, the place where numerous speakers discuss the most extraordinary ideas in front of the different people. Another attraction of Hyde Park is the horse-riding lane known as Rotten Row. There're many swans in London parks and gardens and according to the tradition they are considered to be the property of the Royal Family.

Let's continue our way and stop at Trafalgar Square. It's one of the nerve-centres of London. Why was it named so and what monument can we see in the center of the square?

(one of the students tells the group about Trafalgar Square)

By the way, at Christmas time there is a Christmas tree here which is sent to Britain from Norway every year. And behind Nelson's Column is the National Gallery, an art gallery which contains Britain's best known collection of 2200 pictures including Turner, Hogarth, Gainsborough and Constable.  Near Trafalgar Square there's one more famous place. It's the heart of London's entertainment world, Piccadilly Circus. What do you know about this place?

(one of the students tells the group about Piccadilly Circus)

Yes, the atmosphere of Piccadilly is very cosmopolitan. You can hear a great variety of languages. They say if you hear carefully you may even hear English.

Travelling around  London  you've forgotten to visit some cultural institutions. Let's take the Tube and go to the world famous museum, the British museum. There are 4 kilometres of space inside and this unique collection represents the progress of civilization. What can we find in this museum?

(one of the students tells the group about the British museum)

Of  course, we cannot miss another famous museum in London. Madam Tussaud's is the most popular and talked about wax museum in the world. It's one of London's busiest sights. Why is it so popular?

(one of the students tells about Madam Tussaud's)

Well, I think we should stop our trip here because it's impossible to see all the sights of London during one day. No matter how much of London you see there'll never be enough time.
