Цели и задачи:

• Образовательные: актуализация знаний и умений устной речи по пройденному материалу темы “Мир профессий”.
• Развивающие: развитие логического и ассоциативного мышления, умение систематизировать и обобщать полученные знания.
• Воспитательные: воспитание культуры общения, развитие познавательной активности.
• Практические: формирование и развитие навыков монологической речи; активизация лексики; аудирование незнакомого текста с последующим заполнением таблицы; расширение лексического запаса; активизация грамматических навыков в письменной речи (сослагательное наклонение), умение написать эссе.

Оснащение урока: учебник английского языка для 8 класса О.В. Афанасьевой, И.В. Михеевой В.Н., Enterprise 3 (pre-intermediate), Express Publishing, PET Practice Tests Plus 2, Pearson Longman, аудиомагнитофон, DVD-плеер, раздаточный материал.

Ход урока

I. Организационный момент.

Good morning, pupils. Sit down, please. Today we’re going to speak about jobs and professions of the century, revise some grammar material (Conditionals Types 1,2,3), listen to the texts and do the task after the text including filling in the table and learn how to write down an essay.

Now I’m going to ask you a few questions. Let’s get started. Open your books and let’s check your home task, exercise 62, page 37. Give names to the descriptions of these jobs:

• a person whose job is to help people with the law or talk for them in court;
• a person whose business is to buy, sell or look after houses/land for people;
• a person who does work to improve bad social conditions and help people in need;
• a person who welcomes or deals with people arriving at a hotel, at a place of business, visiting a doctor;
• a person trained to look after sick animals;
• a person whose job is to work with electricity;
• a person who prepares or organizes a newspaper, periodical or book;
• a person who studies chemistry, a, scientist who specializes in chemistry;
• a person who makes and sells medicines;
• a person who owns a travel agency or works there and whose business is to arrange travels.

Keys: a lawyer, an estate agent, a social worker, a receptionist, a vet, an electrician, an editor, a chemist, a pharmacist, a travel agent.

Choose the correct adjectives to complete the sentences and characterize the occupations mentioned.

You will hear a man called Toby Merchant talking on the radio about his job as an engineer with a company called Atkins Engineering. For each question, put a tick in the correct box. You now have 45 seconds to look at the questions for Part 2.

Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully. You will hear the recording twice.

Interviewer: On Jobwise this week, Toby Merchant is going to talk about his job. Welcome Toby. Toby: Thank you.

Interviewer: Now you work for a large engineering company called Atkins Engineering. How long have you been there?

Toby: I've worked there for three years. While I was at university I worked for a small company during the holidays. And when I left university they offered me a job. I stayed there for six months and then I succeeded in getting a much better job at Atkins Engineering.

Interviewer: What kind of work do you actually do?

Toby: Most people in my company work on motorways and road-building. But since I started here I've spent all my time working on the new airport. We haven't finished the designs yet, so building won't start for a while. In the future, I'd really like to work on something smaller like houses and flats.

Interviewer: And do you enjoy your job? Is it what you expected?

Toby: I do enjoy it and no, it's not really what I expected. I thought I'd spend most of my time in the office designing buildings and roads and bridges. I was surprised to find that I actually spend a lot of my time discussing things with other people. I work very closely with architects, for example. And I'm mostly outside, away from the office.

Interviewer: Sounds interesting. It's not a very popular occupation though, is it? Why is that do you think?

Toby: Most people know that engineers earn a good salary, so it's not that. No, it's because young people think it's not going to be interesting. But I find it a very exciting job. And there are lots of opportunities for both men and women.

Interviewer: Are there any disadvantages to the job?

Toby: Well, some people don't like the long hours. That doesn't worry me because I love my work. What I find difficult is that I can't plan my free time. Sometimes there's an emergency or I have to travel to talk to someone. But I always look forward to going on holiday – we have six weeks off a year so I can't really complain!

Interviewer: Did you always want to be an engineer?

Toby: I was always good at maths and science at school. My father's an architect and he was keen for me to do that but I wanted to do something different so I was thinking of becoming a doctor. But I got a job on a building site after I left school and decided to be an engineer.

Interviewer: Thank you, Toby, for coming to talk ....

Teacher: As a part of our careers' advice week we have two guests with us here today to tell us a bit about their work. Our first speaker is Miss Rachel Banner who's going to talk about her work as a news reporter.

Miss Banner: Thank you for inviting me here today, Mr Peacock. Well, first of all, I'd like to say that one of the best things about being a news reporter is that it's so exciting. I get to travel around the world and meet lots of people. My job is interesting too. The news stories I do are different every day, so it never gets boring. Of course, there are disadvantages — as there are with any job. It is often very stressful as we have to do everything in a very short time. It can be dangerous, too, because we often have to work in places where there are wars.

Teacher: Thank you Miss Banner. Next we have Dr Geoff Chalmers who is a surgeon at Branston City Hospital. Thank you for coming, Dr Chalmers.

Doctor: Thank you. Well, I must admit that I am very well paid, but there's a good reason for that: the job needs a lot of skill, and for that you need to spend many years studying. It's a very rewarding job too as it's great being able to save people's lives. Unfortunately, there are also a couple of things that I don't like much about my job. Firstly, it is tiring because we work long unsteady hours. It can also be stressful as you are responsible for people's lives.

Teacher: Thank you Dr Chalmers. Now, if you have any questions ...

Writing (advantages and disadvantages)

Before writing a composition about the advantages and disadvantages of a certain topic you should make a list of the good and bad points, giving reasons for each one. Start your composition by briefly stating the topic, then present the points for and against in two separate paragraphs, giving reasons. End your composition by restating the fact that the topic has both advantages and disadvantages. Remember to use appropriate linking words (e.g. furthermore, to start with, also, what is more, on the other hand, in conclusion, etc). Also begin each paragraph with a topic sentence (a sentence which summarizes what the paragraph is about).

Home task: you are to write an article for your school magazine about the advantages and disadvantages of being either a reporter or a surgeon. Use the notes and the plan below to write your article. The beginning and ending as well as the linking words/phrases have been written for you.
