Цель урока: обобщить и систематизировать материал о Нью-Йорке, формировать уважение к культуре и народу страны изучаемого языка.

Тип урока: урок обобщения и систематизации знаний.

Вид занятия: комбинированный урок, по форме урок-экскурсия.

Задачи урока:

Образовательные:

  • ознакомление учащихся с новым страноведческим материалом по теме;
  • практика речевой деятельности: аудирование и монологическая речь;
  • активизация лексики по теме, расширение словарного запаса;
  • углубление страноведческих знаний;
  • совершенствование произносительных навыков.

Развивающие: создание условий для:

  • развития умения высказать свое мнение на английском языке;
  • развития навыков самостоятельной работы с текстом;
  • развития у учащихся умения выделять главное, сравнивать, обобщать, логически излагать свои мысли;
  • развития языковых, интеллектуальных и познавательных способностей;
  • развития способности анализировать и систематизировать предлагаемый материал.

Воспитательные: создание условий для:

  • воспитания уважительного отношения к культуре и истории другой страны;
  • расширения кругозора учащихся;
  • формирования у учащихся познавательного интереса к изучаемому предмету, к культуре страны изучаемого языка

Good morning. I'm very glad to see you today. At our last lessons we spoke a lot about the capital of the USA Washington. What interesting things have you known about this city? (приложение 1, слайд 2) Your homework was to answer the questions. Open the textbooks at page 46, Exercise 10.

Well done.

So, today we shall speak about the city which is a great contrast to Washington. This city is the largest in the USA; it has a lot of skyscrapers. I think you know what city I am talking about. Right you are. It's New York. (приложение 1, слайд 3)

We are going to visit New York: its boroughs and sights. Here is the proverb for you: "There are

many apples on the tree, but only one big apple". How is this proverb connected with New York?

As you know, we are going to make a project "Welcome to New York". Last lesson we formed 3 groups to collect some interesting information about New York. Are you ready to share the information?

There are many famous monuments in any city, but there is one in New York that is famous all over the world. It's the Statue of Liberty, of course. (приложение 1, слайд 5)

Pupil 1: At the entrance to New York Harbor, in the United States of America, stands one of the world's greatest and best-loved monuments. It is a statue, 151 feet tall, representing a woman with a crown on her head. High in her right hand she is holding a huge torch. The torch lights up at night. In her left hand is a tablet with a date on it - July 4, 1776. That is the date of the Declaration of Independence. The statue is made of copper. Inside the statue there is an elevator and a stairway from the base to crown. The full name of the monument is "The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World", but nowadays it is simply known as the Statue of Liberty. The people of France gave the Statue to the Americans in 1886 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of American independence. It was made by a young sculptor named Auguste Bartholdi.

Teacher: Everybody knows that skyscrapers are the symbol of New York. What are the most famous of them? (приложение 1, слайд 6)

Pupil 2: One of the highest buildings of New York is the Empire State Building. It is a 102 storey building which was built in 1931 and financed by the philanthropist and very rich man D. Rockefeller. It was called "the sky-scraper's king". It includes 2 observatories. From the top you can see all Manhattan.( приложение1, слайд 7)

The United Nation Organization secretariat occupies the thirty-nine storey sky-scraper. It is an international organization. It was formed after the Second World War, and its aim is to keep peace all over the world. (приложение 1, слайд 8)

Rockefeller Center is a complex of 19 commercial buildings between 48th and 51st streets in New York City. Built by the Rockefeller family, it is located in the center of Midtown Manhattan spanning the area between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue. Rockefeller was a rich aristocrat. When he decided to build these buildings during the Great Depression, he got no help from the government. So he used his own money to do it. The Rockefeller Center Christmas Trees are the largest and the most beautiful in New York. (приложение 1, слайд 9)

One of the most beautiful skyscrapers is the Chrysler building. The Chrysler Building is an Art Deco skyscraper. It has 77 stories. When the building first opened October 23, 1929, it contained a public viewing gallery near the top, which a few years later was changed into a restaurant. The former observation floor became a private dining room called the Cloud Club.

Pupil 3: The Central Park is the only green place in New York where people can have a rest. It's a huge park, its construction took 16 years, and it was completed in 1873.Central Park is used by thousands of New Yorkers and visitors every day. Central Park contains several artificial lakes, extensive walking tracks, two ice-skating rinks, a wildlife sanctuary, and grassy areas and playgrounds for children. Here you can see families walking their dogs and young people riding their bikes and roller-skating. You can also see baseball and soccer games here. Some people come here just to rest. They walk, sit in the sun, listen to music, or go to the zoo. (приложение 1, слайд 12)

Times Square is the center of the theater district. The lights from all the theaters and advertisements are very bright. On New Year's Eve, December 31, crowds of people stand in Times Square and wait for midnight. At midnight everyone sees the annual New Year's Eve ball drop and shouts, "Happy New Year!" (приложение 1, слайд 13)

Pupil 4: The theatres and movies of New York are located mostly on Manhattan. The new cultural centre in the city is the Lincoln Centre which was built in 1960s; it includes now the Metropolitan Opera, the Philharmonic Hall and the New School of Music, the New York State Theatre. Broadway is the longest avenue of New York; it stretches nearly 29 kilometres long. It is the place of famous theatres, cafes, restaurants, hotels and shops. The brilliant illuminations at night make this section known as the "Great White Way". It is the part of the city that never goes to sleep. Buses and subway trains run all night. Restaurants and movies never close their doors.

The 5th and the 7th avenues symbolize the women's fashion industry of New York.
