Teacher: Good morning, dear students. I'm glad to see you again. Let's begin our lesson.

Pupils: Good morning, teacher.

T: Today we are going to discuss what are the British like. You have read a lot of texts, done a lot of exercises and listened to a lot of stories about Britain and its people. And I think you could fill me in a bit on this question.

T: Look at the map of the British Isles and try to answer in one sentence. What is Britain? What countries is it made of?

P1: Britain or G.B. is the name for England, Wales and Scotland.

P2: Britain is the 8th largest island in the world.

P3: The British Isles is the name for England, Wales, Scotland, both parts of Ireland, the Isle of man and the Channel Islands.

P4: The United Kingdom is England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The British government is the government of the UK.

T: People who live in Britain are called British. Many people think that "English" is the same as British. Is that so?

P5: Not exactly. England is only one of the 4 nations in the UK. The Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish are British too.

P6: Forgive me, If I keep correcting, but the Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish sometimes get angry when they are called "English".

P7: And there are also millions of British people whose parents first came to Britain in the 1950s and 1960s from India, Pakistan, Hong Kong and other places. Their homes are mainly in the big English cities like London, Birmingham and Manchester.

T: Britain is а land of traditions. Almost everything you come across in Britain is a result of a long history. The British are proud of their traditions and carefully keep them up. You know the British are considered to be conservative.

P8: I've read about the ceremony of the keys at the Tower of London. This strange ceremony takes place every night and is 700 years old. Locking a door or a gate seems to be a simple thing. Not, however, if the gates are of the Tower of London. The Chief Warder of the Tower and the Escort of the key march to the various gates and lock them ceremonially.

P8: On November 5, 1605, Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators planned to blow up Parliament. The plot was discovered and Guy Fawkes was hanged. But the cellars where G.F. was captured are still searched before each opening of Parliament. This is a spectacular ceremony and everything is done just as it was done almost four centuries ago.

P10: The Tower of London is one of the most visited places in Britain. The warders of the Tower of London are also known as "Beefeaters". They guard the Tower of London and help visitors. We have a picture of a Beefeater in the classroom. The beautiful scarlet and gold uniforms you can see in the picture date back to 1552. The same beefeaters make a ceremonial search of the Houses of Parliament before the Queen arrives for the state opening of the Parliament.

T: What other ceremonies connected with the Queen do you know?

P11: The ceremony of Trooping the Colour which takes place on the Queen's "official" birthday on the second Saturday in June.

P12: I'd like to tell about the ceremony which is called "Maundy Money". It takes place on the Thursday before Easter Sunday. The Queen gives out purses of money to older people who have done good work. This tradition is almost seven hundred years old.

T: Now, let's listen to the cassette. I want you to tell me what other traditions and holidays are mentioned in it?

Учащиеся, прослушав записи, отвечают:

  1. St. Valentines Day
  2. Christmas
  3. Halloween
  4. ...
  5. ...
  6. ...

T: And of course speaking about the British we have to say about their "morarchy" love. For more than a thousand years Britain has always had kings or queens. In the past kings had great power and they really helped to make history. They started wars, made laws and did things in their own way. But gradually more and more power went to Parliament.

T: What does the Queen do now?

P1: I think the main business of the royal family is probably being royal.

P2: To my mind the only Queen's job is taking part in traditional ceremonies.

P3: Not exectly. I've read that being Queen is a really busy job. Eliz. II gets up early and begins the day by looking through the newspapers. Then she reads letters from the public. The Queen has daily meetings with her private secretary and lots of meetings with embassadors, new judges and bishops.

P4: I don't agree with him. I think Queen is only a British symbol.

T: Ok. That's right. Also the British are known to be very polite, aren't they? Prove it.

P1: Polite words or phrases such as "Please", "Thank you" and "Excuse me" are used very often in Britain. If the British enjoy the evening, they call hostess the next day, or write her a short "thank you, thank you" letter. The British say it all the time. They say "thank you" even if they give money to a "Shop assistant". In Britain you need four "thank yous" to buy a bus ticket.

P2: The British like forming queues. In fact, queuing is supposed to be their national characteristic.

P3: One of the worst mistakes is to get on a bus without waiting you turn in the queue. The British are very sensitive to such behaviour and they get really annoyed with queue-jumpers-people who don't wait their turn in the queue. Good and bad manners make up the social rules of a country and are not always easy to learn because they are often not written down in books. The British have an expression fir following these "unwritten rules". When in come, do as the Rowans do!!!

T: I want you to watch 3 situations and answer what mistakes were made by the Russians.

Учащиеся смотрят видеофильм и затем отвечают на поставленный вопрос.

T: It's said that the British are reserved. Why do they think so!

P1: The British don't like to show their emotions.

P2: They usually don't easily get into conversation with strangers.

P3: The British don't like personal questions.

P4: They take more time to make friends.

P5: The British would like to know you better before they ask you home.

T: What other characteristic of the British do you know?

P1: The British population drinks about 2.000.000.000 cups of tea a day. That is an average age of nearly 1.040 cups of tea a year for each person. Tea – mostly green tea from China – came to Britain in the late 1500s, but it was only for the rich. It became cheaper about 300 years later, when it was planted in India and later in Ceylon. People from all classes started drinking it. But some people thought that too much tea was bad for your health. So they started putting milk in it, to make it healthier.

P2: It's no secret that British people love their pets to bits and would do anything to make their life happy. Today, half of the 24.2 million homes in G.B. have a pet. Cats are especially popular because people who live alone and go to work like independent pets. There are eight million cats in Britain. Other popular pets are dogs, birds, fish and hamsters. The British are supposed to be a nation of animal lovers.

T: Well, pupils. I think at this lesson you have got much information about Britain and its people. The aim of our lesson was to give you the knowledge of British life in details. This knowledge will help you to avoid mistakes and understand the British way of life better.

T: You can see 3 quotes on the blackboard. Choose the one you like and write a small composition at home.

На доске написаны 3 цитаты:

  1. “Not only England, but every Englishman is an island”
  2. “England is a nation of shopkeepers”
  3. “When two Englishmen meet, their first talk is of the weather”

T: The lesson is over. Good bye.
