Dear friends’. About two hundred years ago man lived in greater harmony with his environment because industry was less developed. Today the situation is quite different. People all over the world are worried about the environment. Newspapers and magazines write about water air and land pollution. The theme of today’s lesson is “Environmental Protection”. The problem of our lesson is the global situation in ecology and what we can do with it. We’ll try to discuss some environmental problems. Let’ begin with the words.

Who would like to fill in the blanks?

The Earth in our ____. We must take care of it. The importance of this task is ____ by the ecologists, scientists, who study the relations between living things and their _______. Each of us must do everything possible to _____ the land, air and water clean. Of course, people undertake some measures to ______ the environment, but this activity is complicated by the economic difficulties (Protect, home, keep, pointed out, environment).

3. Расширение темы.

What ecological problems do you know? (Snowball method)

P1 I found a lot of information connected with the problem of the ozone layer. The pollution and the ozone layer destruction could lead our planet to a global catastrophy. About 5 billion tons of carbon dioxide is released in to the atmosphere every year. These gases hold heat. Trees and plants help to take gases such as carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but we have now destroyed too many trees. There aren’t enough trees and plants to do this job. We make carbon dioxide when we burn wood of drive cars.

P2 People have to solve a lot of environmental problems and one of them is water pollution. For example, lake Baikal. Fifty percent of the world’s purest water has been ruined by the activity of a pulp – and – paper factory. It was the problem of Baikal that made out people think seriously about the man – nature relationship.

P3 More than 30 years ago the Aral was a bright blue sea with a lot of fish. The rivers Amudarya and Syrdarya supplied it with water. But then the water of the rivers was diverted to cotton plantations. As a result, the level of the sea has dropped 13 metres and the shores have gone back 70-80 kilometres. The exposed seabed has turned into a desert which sends 70 million tons of salty dust info the atmosphere every year. The disaster in the Aral puts in a dangerous position the health and lives of nearly three million people living by the sea.

4. Заключительная часть урока. Подведение итогов.

Teacher: What can we do to keep our planet clean?

P1 We need to save our water, to keep it clean and healthy so people, plants and animals will always have some to drunk. It’s very important for us to stop making acid rain. Everyone can help keep our air clean and safe. Everybody can help stop the green house effect by using less energy, potecting and planting trees.

P2 Scientists are very concerned about the ozone layer, because a lot of it has gone away in just a few years. So it’s very important that we learn to do something about it. We can all to stop the ozone layer from disappearing!

Teacher: Every body understands that it is necessary to undertake some measures in order to save our planet, to make our cities safe to live in, to make water in rivers clean to drink it. Now, please, take your notebooks and write some sentences to answer the following question:

What would you do to improve the situation if you were the leader of your country?

Possible answers:

If I were the leader of my country, I would stop logging companies from destroying the rain forest and make them to plant new trees.

- I wouldn’t allow hunters to kill endangered species.
- I would create special parks where these animals could live safely.

Teacher: What can we do to keep the Earth clean and healthy? What should be done to change the existing situation? Please, complete the following sentences:

  1. Try not to buy pre-packaged food because … (it creates a lot of rubbish).
  2. Use less washing up liquid because … (it pollutes the seas and rivers).
  3. Use public transport because … (cars pollute the air).
  4. Never light fires in forests because … (trees will burn).
  5. Do not drop rubbish in the streets because … (it looks horrible, use rubbish bins).
  6. Do not throw plastic bottles into the sea because … (fish will die)

Teacher: So, in spite of very thing, we believe that the Earth is our common home, a big green home. All its inhabitants – people, animals and birds – need to live in peace and harmony.
