Pupil 2 : The English language came to British Isles from northern Europe in the fifth century. From the fifteenth century, the British began to sail all over the world and became explorers, colonists and imperialists. They took the English language to North America, Canada and the Caribbean, to South Africa, to Australia and New Zealand, to South Asia (especially India), to the British colonies in Africa, to South East Asia and the South Pacific. English is part of the Germanic branch of the Indo – European family of languages. It is spoken as a native language by around 377 million and as a second language by around 375 million speakers in the world. Around 750 million people are believed to speak English as a foreign language. English has an official or a special status in 75 countries with a total population of over 2 billion.

Слайд 6. Discover Britain Quiz (do you know that…..) You can discuss some points in your small groups.

Слайд 7. Listening. American food and drink.

What is “ American” food? The answer is that it is part Italian, part British, part German, part Mexican, part Chinese….. When people from other countries came to live in the US, they brought different cooking traditions. Some of them opened restaurants. Today Americans enjoy food from all over the world. Over the years some foreign dishes changed a little. Doughnuts were originally from Holland. In 1847 a young American boy told his mother that her doughnuts were never cooked in the middle. He cut out the centres and his mother cooked them – and they were very tasty! Maybe the US is most famous for “fast foods”. The first fast food restaurants served hamburgers, but now they serve other kinds of food too. Inside there is often a “salad bar”, where you can help yourself to as much salad as you want. Americans eat a lot, and when they go to a restaurant, they don’t expect to be hungry afterwards. Most restaurants will put a lot of food on your plate – sometimes it can be too much. But if you can’t finish it all, don’t worry: they will give you a “doggy bag” and you can take it home. Most Americans now have a light breakfast instead of the traditional eggs, bacon, toast, orange juice and coffee. But on weekends there is more time, and a large late breakfast or early lunch (“brunch”) is often eaten with family or friends.

Слайд 13. How to study English?

The easiest way to learn a foreign language is:

  • to have a good textbook
  • to have a good teacher
  • to go to an English – speaking country
  • to have an English – speaking pen friend
  • to chat on the Internet
  • to phone your friends abroad
  • to read English books and youth magazines
  • to read labels and instructions on everything you buy
  • to watch videos and films in English
  • to listen to the radio and TV musical programmes

Слайд 14. Where to study English?

Слайд 15. What is the best way to study languages?

Travelling is the best way to study languages.

Modern life is impossible without travelling. We can travel by car, by bus, by bicycle, by train, by ship, by plain. Each kind of travelling has its advantages. The fastest way of travelling is by plain. But it’s expensive.

Cycling is very useful too. We can stop where we like and visit sights of interest, enjoy fresh air. We needn’t keep any time-table or get tickets at the booking office.

Travelling is always exciting. We learn history, culture and traditions of different lands. We come to know more about music, art literature and famous people. We become more educated. It’s better to see ones than to hear many times.

Travelling by train is slower than by plain, but it has its advantages. You can see the country you are travelling through and enjoy the beautiful nature. It may be an express train or a passenger one.

Some people prefer to travel by ship when possible. A sea voyage is very enjoyable, indeed. But to my mind the best way of travelling is by car. The advantages of this way of spending your holiday are that you don’t have to buy a ticket, you can stop whenever you wish, where there is something interesting to see.

Слайд 16. Why do we study English?

Knowledge of the foreign language is becoming more important nowadays. There are many reasons why we study English. If you know English, you can communicate (personally or in writing) with others who use this language.

If you wish to make a career in science, you must read scientific books and magazines in English. Knowing English you can read the works of foreign writers in original. Knowledge of foreign languages helps people of different countries to develop friendship and understanding.
