T: Girls and boys, the topic of our lesson is “ Teenage  Years - Do They Bring Luck?” We’ll speak about you, teenagers, about your lives and problems. But I have a question for you: “What does the word “ a teenager” mean?”

P1: I think a teenager is a person at the age from 12 to 16.

T: You’re not quite right.

P2 : I don’t know exactly but may be teenagers are children who are from 13 to 17.

T.: Well, let’s look at this word, at its word-building. It consists of two words: teen and ager. The numerals from 13 to 19 are formed with the suffix-teen. And the word “ager” means somebody at a definite age. That’s why  a teenager is a boy or a girl who is from 13 to 19 years old. (at the age from 13 to 19).

Now let’s work with your textbooks p.122; ex.1.

John McCarthy, 17

Teenagers today have a lot more to worry about than their parents ever did. The world is becoming a very scary place. Violence, teen pregnancy, and AIDS cases are increasing . More and more teens are turning to drugs and alcohol. I’m sure that almost every teenager will at one time or another have an experience with drugs, alcohol and sex. These things combined with personal problems and mates’ influence make being a teenager very difficult. I don’t have a single friend who has never had a drink of alcohol. Some of them don’t drink at all now, but some do. It seems to me that adults are generally quite indifferent to what their children do. Once you reach the age of sixteen or seventeen, your parents think you are old enough to decide for yourself and let you do what you want.

Estelle Hammersley, 16

It’s true that there are so many problems facing teens today. I go to an all-girls private school which makes my school life easier. I focus more attention on doing my work than on impressing a cute guy. But when I go out on weekends there is a lot of pressure to drink and smoke. There are no teen clubs close to where I live so weekend activities are limited. My friends and I don’t do anything exciting, but we usually have fun just being around each other. We usually talk about humorous things. On the other hand, we also talk about serious things like abortion, sex, and politics.

My friends and I try to help each other if we can, because a lot of the time, being a teenager isn’t fun. It’s a chore (duty). You have to go to school and your parents want you to get good grades, which is hard enough in itself, and you have to deal with your own problems too.

Bart Naik, 16

Where I live teenagers have few dangers, but even in my town kids can get alcohol easily. I personally do not drink alcohol. I don’t think drinking is exciting. But I know some guys who do. My view is that if they want to, then they can – it’s their life, they are free to decide and nobody can forbid them to do what they want.

The people I hang about (слоняться) with don’t really put any pressure (оказывать давление) on me or anyone else. Dating is not a big deal (not so important).

We usually go out with a bunch (group) of friends, both girls and boys. Social events such as discos and parties are a very popular conversation topic among teenagers. At school, politics are discussed quite a lot but along with this there are conversations about boyfriends, girlfriends, and plans for the weekend ahead. I feel also that the majority of boys are football-mad and the girls are very conscious of (crazy about) their appearance and clothes. Being a teenager is great fun. Take it easy.

British teenagers are sharing their opinions on what it means to be young. We’ll listen to them and answer the question: Which of these teenagers  thinks that being young

brings a lot of serious problems?
allows you to do exciting and wonderful things?
is a kind of duty and makes you feel responsible for what you do?

P3: John McCarthy thinks that being young brings a lot of serious problems.

P4: Estelle also thinks that there are so many problems facing teens today.

P5: As for Bart Naik, his opinion is that being young allows them to do exciting and wonderful things.

P6: Estelle thinks  that  being a teen is a kind of duty and makes you feel responsible for what you do.

Reading for detail. Some questions for discussing.

T: How do John, Estelle and Bart feel about the life of today’s teenagers? Do teenage years bring luck to them? What do they say about it?

P7 : John thinks that the world is becoming a scary place. The life of a teenager is difficult for him. It seems to him that adults are generally quite indifferent to what their children do.  Teenage years don’t bring him luck.

P8 : John and Estelle think their life isn’t so lucky  as it may seem because they face different problems. They are surrounded by alcohol, drugs and sex problems. Their parents make them study well and they don’t  help them decide what  to do. They think that being a teen isn’t fun because they don’t do anything exciting. Being a teen is a chore.

P9: Bart thinks that being a teenager is great fun. Teenage years bring him luck.

P10: Nobody puts pressure on Bart, nobody can forbid him to do what he wants. He has a lot of activities.

T: What problems facing young people do John, Estelle and Bart usually discuss with their friends?

P11 : They discuss different things such as drugs, alcohol, sex, dating and others.

P12:  They also talk about plans for weekend, boyfriends and girlfriends.

P1 : They discuss serious problems as well as everyday humorous things.

T:  What do the teenagers think of adults’ attitude towards teens’ problems? Do they approve of it?

P: The teenagers think that adults are indifferent to their problems and try to solve problems themselves.

P2: Estelle’s parents only want her to get good marks.

T: Do their mates influence these teen’s lives much?

P3: Estelle’s mates influence her. When she goes out on weekends there is a lot of pressure to drink and smoke.

P4: As for Bart, he isn’t influenced by his mates. The people he hangs about with don’t really put any pressure on him or anyone else.

T: Somebody said: “We are too young to see only bad sides of life.”

Which of these   teenagers could say the following? What makes you think so?

P5: To my mind Bart could say it because he is quite optimistic. He doesn’t make much problems out of nothing and can see good sides even in the things that seem bad at first. He enjoys life.

T: At home you  read 2 poems from the Just 17 magazine. What problems do the authors write about? Ex.2.p.124-125

Why is nothing ever easy?
Why are some boys so very sleazy ( неряшливые )?
Why can’t I have that brand (фирменное ) new dress?
Why am I under so much stress?
Why don’t my parents ever believe me?
Why can’t they ever see…
Why do I feel so often unhappy?
Why do they always wish I was still in a nappy (в пелёнках )?
Why does my face feel like a block of lard (кусок сала )?
Why are all these years really hard?

There’s a reason for all these problems and tears.
I’m going through my TEENAGE YEARS!
A frustrated teenager,
Scarborough
Growing up, doesn’t it just suck (поглощает)?
It seems to be full of constant bad luck.
Zits (прыщи), bad hair days and
putting on weight,
So many reasons for your self-hate.
But hey, you’re alive, you’re unique,
you’re so cool,
Why do you always feel such a fool?

Be true to yourself, forget all your faults,
And you’ll soon be thinking much happier thoughts.
Live life to the max and paint your town red,
Who cares what people think and what they’ve said?
Don’t let them win and make you feel bad,
‘Cause people like that are really quite sad.
So, enjoy your teens and have some fun,
Your life has only just begun!
Lauren, Romford

P6: They write about problems in the family, at school, about stress.

T: Which of the authors writes only about the teen’s problems? Who of them suggests the solution?

P7: A frustrated teenager writes only about problems. She is like John.

P8: It is obvious that the first author is pessimistic. The girl has nothing but problems. I think that a problem of not having a new brand dress isn’t a big problem. To my mind it  isn’t a problem at all.

P9: The second author Lauren writes not only about problems. She also suggests some solutions. She suggests to live life to the max, to enjoy the teens years.

P10: Lauren is optimistic like Bart. Though she has her own problems she can enjoy her life and cheer up others.

P11: The second author suggests to be true to yourself, forget all faults.

T: One of our pupils has translated the first poem.

T: Do you think that people can live without problems?

P12: I think they can’t. I’ll try to explain. A problem is the result of the activity of human mind. Only a simpleton can have no problems and be happy with everything. Nothing will come of nothing.

P1: I completely agree. Problems are inevitable when people do something. I think that without problems our life will be boring. Moreover, when people start to cope with different problems they become stronger and more experienced.

P5: As for me, I don’t think that life without problems will be better. People harden like steel while overcoming problems.

T: I see. There are many problems that young people have to face when they stop being children. I can understand that at this age all feelings and emotions are very strong, all problems seem very important. I’d like to know what kind of problems you have.

P2: To my mind most of us have the same problems as John and Estelle have. One of the main problems is misunderstanding from the dearest people- from our parents.

P3: Sometimes we also face the same misunderstanding from the side of the teachers. They think that youth is given only for studying.

P4: A strange thing is happening. On the one hand our society agree that 15-17 year-old people are old enough to be responsible for what they do and give them quite a lot of freedom and rights. But on the other hand, most adults think that teenagers are too young to be taken seriously. This misunderstanding produces many problems.

P5: I’m lucky because my parents understand me. They don’t think I‘m a baby. That’s why I can share all my problems with my mum and dad.

P6: It’s great. It’s important to have a person who really understands you. Don’t forget about the problem of education. To my mind it’s a very serious problem. It’s very difficult to find a suitable institute and a profession for the rest of your life.

P7: You are quite right. There are many educational institutions at present, but the quality of training is different.

P8: I’d like to add that the choice of the educational institution depends on the school you study at, on your parents, on the financial conditions of the family and, of course, your likes and dis likes.

P9: But there isn’t only this type of problems- personal ones. We also have the problems the whole generation has to face. Some of them are health and ecology problems, and a lot of others.

T: Our discussion is very interesting and useful. But because of shortage of time we’ll continue it another time. The topic of our lesson is “Teenage Years - Do they bring luck?”

What is your own attitude towards teenage years?  What does growing up mean for you? Share your opinions with your classmates.

P10: Being a teenager isn’t very easy for me. We have to go to school and parents want we to get good marks. We have a lot housework as well. I’m sure that a teenager isn’t fun. I feel that It’s a chore.

P11: As for me, being a teenager is very serious. Sometimes it is even dangerous because violence, teen pregnancy, and AIDS cases are increasing. But at the same time being a teenager is being with friends and having everything for the first time.

P12: I think that being a teenager is a chore first of all. On the one hand, you have to go to school and to do homework. We also have to do some housework. As for me, I can say that I’m lucky because my parents don’t make me do a lot of housework. But I understand that it is my duty to help my parents. That’s why I do some housework.

On the other hand, there are a lot of scary things in our world. They are violence, drugs, alcohol and others. Sometimes friends influence your life. I think I’m lucky twice because there is no pressure to drink and smoke.

There is a lot of dangerous things but we are too young to see only bad sides of life. But I can also agree that teenage years are great. We are young, alive, unique. We have time to have fun and rest. Our life has only begun!

T: In conclusion I want to say that youth is very important period in the life of people. This is the time when a person discovers the world and tries to determine his/her place in the universe. Young people face lots of problems which are very important for them. But you have friends, parents, teachers who can help you in difficult situations. Take it easy. You can paint your life red and be happy. The main thing is that you are young and your life has only begun.
