Tundra trees and plants
Tundra - from the Finnish word "tunturi" means "treeless bare place"- is a zonal treeless type of vegetation dominated by mosses, various berries such as cranberries, blueberries, cloudberry, bearberry. The important feature of tundra plants is cold resistance. In Yamal, you can find Arctic willow, dwarf birch, Siberian spruce and larch, bagulnik.
The main reason for the absence of trees in tundra is the lack of nitrogen available to plants, in which water-regulatory mechanisms are disrupted, as a result of which trees die. In addition, permafrost and a short summer period are affected.
The forest tundra of Yamal territory is a combination of woodlands, tundra communities and swamps. Sparse woodlands are formed by Siberian larch. This is the most frost-resistant, light-loving Siberian tree species. Larch is called a summer coniferous tree, since in autumn the tree sheds needles. It is interesting to know that the name of one YANAO cities is - Labytnangi - means "seven larches". This named was derived from the language of the Khanty people.
The most important plant for the nutrition of reindeer is reindeer moss - yagel. It refers to lichens, which are symbiotic associations of fungi. The composition of reindeer moss is studied quite well. This plant contains vitamins A and C, macro- and microelements: iron, barium, copper, chromium, titanium, manganese, nickel and iodine. Reindeer moss, in addition to feed, is necessary for reindeer as a remedy for intestinal parasites.
The queen of berries in Yamal is cranberry. It contains a lot of vitamins and microelements. The berry grows in a swampy area. Cranberries bloom in June, and ripen only at the end of September. Cranberry fruits are rich in vitamin C and therefore it is equated to oranges, lemons and grapefruit.
The second Yamal berry is considered a lingonberry or cowberry - a perennial green shrub. The size of the berry can reach twenty centimeters. Cowberry is painted in clearly defined red color and is small in size. It has a sweet but at the same time sour taste. This berry ripens at the end of August. The fruit contains carbohydrates, organic acids, vitamins A, C, E; glucose, fructose.
Blueberry, which is considered one of the popular berries of Yamal, has a black color with a bluish shimmering. Its fruit is small-sized and watery with a weak sweet taste. But this berry is the most useful as it increases concentration, reduces fever and inflammation during colds, strengthens blood vessels and participates in the fight against sclerosis. The composition of blueberries includes vitamins B1 (2), PP, C, A, P; fiber, glucose, fructose.
Black currant is found in the southern part of Yamal. By chemical composition, this berry is a natural concentrate of vitamins, especially vitamin C, which is so necessary for the human body.
Another berry - cloudberry - resembles raspberries, only it is pained in amber-yellow color. Cloudberry has a high concentration of potassium (калий) and calcium, magnesium and iron, phosphorus and silicon (кремний); vitamins C, B1(3), PP, A. The use of cloudberry improves cardiac activity, restores the affected cells of the body and is useful in the manifestations (проявление) of oncology.
Although the flora of Yamal is not huge, but it is unique and useful.
