Activity title:

'Where is Lucas?'

2

Skill(s):

Answering questions about positions of objects in the picture

3

Level(s):

PreA1 Starters

4

Exam part:

Speaking Part One

5

Aim(s):

To answer questions beginning with "Where…"; to be able to recognize prepositions of place and to use them in speech.

6

Materials needed:

1) Scene picture (Handbook for Teachers), 2) A small picture of a cat

7

Preparation:

1) Photocopy scene picture, 2) Print and cut out a picture of a small cat

8

Procedure:

Step 1. Introduction to the scene card. The teacher explains to pupils that the family in the picture have got a small red cat called Lucas. Lucas likes to run around the house. Pupils should help the teacher to find the cat.

Step 2. Practice. The teacher puts the picture of Lucas on the picture, e.g. next to the table, and asks "Is Lucas next to the table?". Pupils have to answer "Yes" or "No". The teacher keeps asking the questions using different prepositions of place.

Step 3. The teacher puts the picture of Lucas on the picture, e.g. next to the table, and asks "Where is Lucas?" Pupils have to answer (e.g. "Next to the table").

Variation(s)

The same procedure could be done in a little different way. Pupils work in pairs. Each pair has a scene picture and a picture of a cat. P1 places the picture of a cat on the picture, e.g. next to the table, and says the INCORRECT sentence about the place of the cat (e.g. "Lucas in under the cupboard"). P2 has to listen carefully and to correct the statement (e.g. "No, he isn't. Lucas is next to the table") Then pupils swap roles. Suggested time - 5 min.

Reflections

Kids like doing such exercises. All parts of the exercise are quite easy. The most popular part is as described in "Variations" part due to the fact kids like pair work and like their attentiveness being tested.
