Task 3. Read and translate the text:
The unique and tremendous region known as the region of islands, forests, fjords, fish, oil and quiet people, whose ancestors were Vikings - stretches in the north of Europe. Three countries based the Scandinavian peninsula such as Denmark, Norway and Sweden, but at the end of the XIX century Finland was the province of Sweden. Iceland is also considered the part of Scandinavia. The name of the peninsula is derived from the term ‘Scania’ which means the land of the goddess Scadi. That’s why women can rule the country and do it successfully. All in all the three of the fifth countries are ruled by the kings and only Finland and Iceland are the republics and ruled by the presidents.
The highest income of the citizens is in Norway, but the lowest one is in Finland. The name “Norway” means “the way to the north”. The territory of the country is only 385km2. Norway is famous for its fjords. The average temperature in summer is 30 degrees by Celsius and in winter 10 degrees. That’s all due to the warm Golf Stream. The population of the country is 5 million people.
Norway is the constitutional monarchy with the king Harald V and the prime-minister Erna Sulberg. The motto of this country is “Yes, we love this country”. The capital of the country is Oslo. The national language is Norwegian. The main political parties are the Norwegian Labour party and the Conservative party.
As you know, the famous Viking Harald Fairhair travelled to the other countries and conquered them, such as the United Kingdom of Britain, Iceland, Greenland, Ireland. He was the first from the Whites to travel to the North America. For example, the modern-day Irish cities of Dublin, Limerick and Waterford were founded by Norwegian settlers.
Nowadays Norway is on the second place for exporting oil and gas after the UAE.
As for the traditional cuisine Norwegians show the influence of long seafaring and farming traditions with salmon, herring, trout and codfish.
Sports are a central part of Norwegian culture, and popular sports include Association football, biathlon, cross-country skiing and ski jumping. Norway is the most successful country in the Winter Olympic of all time. For example, the well-known biathlete Ole Einar Bjorndalen is the most successful Winter Olympian of all time, who won 13 medals. He married our citizen – Darya Domracheva.
Sweden is the country of brave knights. For all time they were the best in military actions. The motto of the country is: “For Sweden – with the Times”. Sweden is the unitary parliamentary constitutional monarchy. The king of the country is Carl XVI Gustaf and the Prime-minister is Stefan Lofven. The population of the country is more than 10,000,000 people.
It has the world's eighth-highest per capita income and ranks highly in numerous metrics of national performance, including quality of life, health, education, protection of civil liberties, economic competitiveness, equality, prosperity and human development.
Sweden is an export-oriented mixed economy. Timber, hydropower and iron ore constitute the resource base of an economy with a heavy emphasis on foreign trade.
The capital of the country is Stockholm, which means “the island of piles” (остров на сваях). It consists of fourteen islands. It was founded in 1187. The population of the city is about 1,000,000 million people. It’s the purest city in the world. There are not any industrial factories in this city, the main industry is tourism.
There are many well-known places of interests, such as Vasa ship, the City Hall where every year holds the Nobel Prize banquet. Astrid Lingren is the most translated children’s author. Her books “Peppi Longstocking”, “Karlson-on-the roof” and many other plays are televised all over the world.
The next country with the fairy-tale foundation is Denmark. It is southern and smallest of the Nordic countries. The population of the country is more than 5,000,000 people. It is the parliamentary constitutional monarchy. The queen is now Margrethe II. The Prime Minister is Lars Rasmussen. The Constitution of Denmark was signed on 5 June 1849, ending the absolute monarchy which had begun in 1660. It establishes a constitutional monarchy organised as a parliamentary democracy. The government and national parliament are seated in Copenhagen, the nation's capital, largest city and main commercial centre. The motto of the country is “the God’s help, the love of the folk, the power of Denmark”. The capital of the country is Copenhagen, which means “the trader’s habour”. The outstanding fairy-teller lived in Copenhagen and loved this city very much. He was Hans Andersen. Some of his most famous fairy tales include "The Emperor's New Clothes", "The Little Mermaid", "The Nightingale", "The Snow Queen", "The Ugly Duckling", "Thumbelina" and many more.
The prototype of Hamlet, prince of Denmark, wrote by William Shakespeare, was Viking Amled, the last king of Utland. William Shakespeare wrote the prince’s life exactly to the original. Amled’s father was killed by his uncle Fenge, later Fenge married the royal widow Gertue. Fenge wanted to get rid of his newphew, but Amled was the lucky man and tried to disappear in England. After several years Amled returned to Denmark and saw the feast of uncle. He lured his stepmother from this hall, and burned his enemy - Fenge.
The last country, the former province of Sweden from 1150 to 1809, the part of the Soviet Russia from 1809 up to 1917 is Finland. ‘Suomi’ is the common name of Finland and translated as “the land of swamps”. From 1917 this country chose the parliamentary way of structure. Now it’s the presidential republic. The anthem or motto of the country is “Our land”. The head of the country now is Sauli Niinisto. The population of Finland is growing every year, now its 5,000,000 people. The capital of the country is Helsinki.
The economy of the country is concerned the best in the world and it’s the highest industrial country according to the annual report of the World’s Economical Rating. Many products are done with respect to foreign trades. The largest sector is electronics. The machinery, vehicles, and other engineered metal products; forest industry; and chemicals are on the second place. Finland has significant timber, mineral (iron, chromium, copper, nickel, and gold) and freshwater resources. It’s the stable country.
Finland is the land of natural parks under the government’s protection. There are many lakes there. The Finns are fond of sauna, they invented it in the medieval ages. They have saunas in every type of buildings; they can make business decisions in sauna. Finns are fond of sports and just crazy about physical training. In all streets in the city or in the village you can see two kinds of pathway: one for the cyclists and the other one is for pedestrians.
This is the land of Santa Claus with his winter residence and magic reindeers near the small town of Rovaniemi.
Winter sports are very popular among Finns. Here was invented the well-known Scandinavian or Nordic walking, using ski sticks.
Iceland is a Nordic island country in the North Atlantic Ocean. It has a population of 332,529 and an area of 103,000 km2 (40,000 sq mi), making it the most sparsely populated country in Europe. The capital and largest city is Reykjavík. Reykjavík and the surrounding areas in the southwest of the country are home to over two-thirds of the population. Iceland is volcanically and geologically active. According to sagas, the settlement of Iceland began in the year 874 AD when the Norwegian chieftain Ingólfr Arnarson became the first permanent settler on the island. From the 13th century Iceland was captured by Norway. Since 1814 this country was under the rule of Denmark. In 1918 Iceland was independent, but it took years to become a republic. Only in 1944 it was proclaimed as the independent republic country. Now the president of the country is Guðni Th. Jóhannesson. The main economic sphere is fishing. Whaling was prohibited there since only 2006. Now due to the volcanic geysers the country develops its hydroelectric and geothermal power.
