The council with the munchkins"

("All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players”)

Так, например, предлагаемая постановка “The council with the munchkins” (по мотивам произведения L.E. Frank Baum “The Wizard of Oz”) поможет учащимся закрепить навыки использования грамматической конструкции there is/there are, правильно использовать модальный глагол can в утвердительных и отрицательных предложениях, а также имеет своей целью отработку вопросительных слов: what, where, who, how many.

Dead leaves, seaweed, rotten eggs too;
Stir them in my witches’ brew.
I got magic, ala-ka-zama-ka-zoo.
Spider web, mouldy bread, mucky mud, too;
Stir them in my witches brew.
I got magic, ala-ka-zama-ka-zoo.
Ooh, my witches’’ brew.
Ooh, what’s it gonna do to you? Boo

Storyteller: In the morning the tornado stopped; the house with Dorothy and Toto landed with a bump in the curios land of the munchkins. The Munchkins are strange little people. They are no bigger than Dorothy.

Scene 2

Dorothy (просыпаясь): What happened? Where are we? The house is not moving.

Toto: We are in a fairy land.

Dorothy: Toto, you can speak, can’t you?

Toto: Yes, I can. All animals can speak in fairy lands/

Dorothy: How wonderful!

Dorothy: This is a very beautiful country. There are a lot of fruit on the trees.

Toto: And look! How many flowers! They are blue and pink and white, all colours .

Dorothy: There are a lot of beautiful birds in the trees. How sweetly they are singing!

Toto: Look! What queer people are coming to us. They are so small like children but look like your aunt and uncle.

Dorothy: Their hats are blue and there are little bells on them. What do they want?

The Munchkins (in chorus): You are welcome, most noble Sorceress, to the land of the Munchkins.

The Witch of the North: we are very grateful to you/ Thank you very much.

Dorothy: I am not a sorceress. I am Dorothy, and I haven’t done anything.

The Munchkins: You have set us free from the Witch of the East.

The Witch of the North: You killed her.

Dorothy: You are very kind. But this is a mistake. I haven’t killed anything.

The Witch of the North: Your house did! See! There are her two toes under your house.

Toto: There is a woman under our house.

Dorothy: Oh, dear! Oh, dear! The house killed her! Who was she?

Munchkin 1: She was the wicked Witch of the East.

Munchkin 2: We were her slaves.

Munchkin 3: We worked for her day and night!

The Witch of the North: Now the Munchkins are free.

Munchkins (together): We are very grateful to you for this.

Dorothy (обращаясь к фее): And who are you?

The Witch of the North: I’m the Witch of the North.

Dorothy: Oh! Are you a real witch?

The Witch of the North: Yes, indeed! But I am a good witch, and the people love me.

The Munchkins: yes, she is a good and kind witch. She is our friend.

The Witch of the North: There were only four witches in all the land of Oz, and two of them are good witches. They live in the North and in the South. Those who lived in the East and in the West were wicked witches. But now there is only one wicked Witch in all the land of Oz. She lives in the West.

Dorothy: But my aunt has told me that the witches were all dead.

The Witch of the North: Where does your aunt live?

Dorothy: In Kansas.

Munchkins: We have never heard about this country.

The Witch of the North: What is it?

Toto: Where are the feet of the wicked Witch?

Munchkins: They have disappeared.

The Witch of the North: She was so old that she dried up quickly in the sun.

Munchkins: That’s the end of her.

The Witch of the North: These shoes are yours. You shall have them to wear.

Munchkin 1: The Witch of the east was proud of them.

Munchkin 2: They have some charm.

Munchkin 3: But what it is we never know.

Dorothy: Thank you very much. They are very nice. But I want to get back to my aunt and uncle… Can you help me?

The Witch of the North: Sorry, but we cannot. We don’t know where your country is.

Munchkin 1: There is a great desert at the East. We cannot cross it.

Munchkin 2: It’s the same at the South.

Munchkin 3: And at the west lives the wicked Witch of the West. She can make you her slave.

The Witch of the North: I’m afraid my dear, you’ll have to live with us.

The Witch of the North: Listen, Dorothy! Oz himself is the Great Wizard. He is very powerful. He lives in the City of Emeralds. Go to the City. Perhaps Oz will help you.

Dorothy: Where is the City of Emeralds?

The Witch of the North: It is in the centre of the country.

Toto: Is Oz a good man?

The Witch of the North: I have never seen him. But he is a good Wizard.

Dorothy: How can I get there?

Munchkin 1: You must walk.

Munchkin 2: It’s a long journey.

Munchkin 3: It’ s a difficult journey.

Dorothy: Can you go with me?

Munchkins: No, we can’t.

The Witch of the North: No, they cannot. And I cannot go with you. But you cannot get lost. The road to the City of Emeralds is paved with yellow bricks. When you get to Oz, tell your story and ask him to help you.

The Witch of the North: My kiss will help you on the way to the City of Emeralds. Good-bye, my dear!

Munchkins (Кланяются): Good-bye, Dorothy. Have a pleasant journey!

Dorothy and Toto: Good-bye!
