T.: Good morning, dear friends. I am glad to see you at our English lesson. Let’s go down to work. The aim of our lesson today is to develop speech habits on the topic “Friends and Friendship”. Now look on the screen, please. There you can see a poem by Mark Santos, an American teenager.

T.: “ For me a friend is a person who cares,
For me a friend is a person who shares,
A person who is honest and fair,
A friend is someone who is always there.
Friendship is a feeling that lasts forever.
And a true friend betrays you never.

T.: Answer, please. How does Mark characterize friends and friendship?

P1: Friends are people, who care, share, who are always there and betrays you never, who are helpful.

P2.: Friendship is a feeling that lasts forever.

T. On the screen you see the word box, use it while answering the questions below.

1) What shows that the children are friends?

2) Why do young people make friends?

3) What is special about them?

T.: Your assignment in English for today was to comment on the English proverbs you see on the screen:

1) “A friend in need is a friend indeed”

2) “A good friend is as the sun in winter”

3) “One for all and all for one”

4) “A friend is easier lost than found”

P3: The proverb “A friend in need is a friend indeed” means that we cannot live without friends, that real friends are always ready to help each other, that real friendship is possible only when people respect and trust each other. So, the friend that helps when you need help is a true and real friend.

P4: “A good friend is a as sun in winter”.

This is a good proverb, isn’t it? The proverb means that a real friend makes your life happier and more interesting. He is dear to you and you want your friendship to last for a very long time. That’s what I think about this proverb.

P5: “One for all and all for one”.

This proverb is the slogan of the collective. The pupils’ collective is strong when its members are good comrades and friends. Collective activity among the pupils means that everybody has a duty. You should never do anything which is against your collective. Such friendship means that you will criticize your friend if he is wrong and always try to help him if it is necessary.

T.: 1) Has everybody duty in your class?

2) Is your class collective strong?

P6: “A friend is easier lost than found”.

This proverb means that it is difficult to find a good friend. You may lose a friend quickly if you do something wrong. We must always think how to keep friendship. And there is another thing which is no less important. I you want to have a friend you have to be good friends yourselves.

T.: “Now you will hear (read) a story about a friendship which did not last long.

Let us listen to what Raya, a seventh-form pupil, has to say in a letter to her favourite writer. Then there will be a discussion in which, I hope, everybody will take an active part. Here is Raya’s letter”.

I am very, very sad today. You see, two or three months ago I was introduced to Nina from a parallel form. We became friends very quickly. We went together to the skating-rink and to the library. Sometimes Nina came to my place to do homework. And she was so beautiful, so clever. I thought she was ready to do anything for our friendship. I didn’t go to her place, and I cannot explain why. Perhaps because she did not ask me to visit her or because I had no time.

Yesterday Nina did not come to school, so I decided to visit her after the sixth lesson. Well, when I entered Nina’s flat, I saw that she was not ill. She was having dinner. She did not ask me to take off my coat or to join her at the dinner table.

After dinner Nina began to tell me about many expensive things bought by her parents. Here, at home, she was very different from what she was at school, and I did not want to stay at her place any more.

When I was leaving, Nina said, “Don’t say anything at school, please. And come again when you have time, we’ll listen to some music”.

Well, I have lost a friend and I am not very sorry. But how can I trust people who may have two faces like Nina has? As a member of the school literature circle she spoke about high moral principles and what is right and wrong. But at home she spoke proudly about what her father could buy with his money. I am very sad today.

  • человек может иметь истинные и мнимые достоинства;
  • о человеке судят не по словам, а по его делам и поступкам;
  1. For a long time Raya only heard Nina’s words. She did not see what Nina did in different situations. In this explanations of why Raya did not know her friend well?
  2. Why wasn’t Raya very sorry when she lost her friend?
  3. Do you think she was right?
  4. What must we do not make mistakes in choosing friends?
  5. Do you think it’s always right to part from your friend if you learn something unpleasant about him or her?
  6. Is it possible not to trust people if you’ve made a mistake in choosing your friend?

“He who seeks a faultless friend, remains friendless”-

1. What is necessary to do to keep a friendship strong?

P7: In order to keep a friendship strong it is important: to live in close vicinity to each other and to be able to meet regularly and keep up communication. If you can see your friend very often and you have a lot of in common, a very deep friendship can develop.

2. Who has a real friend?

Tell us about your friend?

P8: I think I have a real friend, called Ann. We often get together with Ann, because we are neighbours. I can rely on her as she is a true friend. I am sure she will never betray me: She can keep secrets and has a sense of humour. She always gives me a hand if I need it, that is, if have a problem, she is always there for me and makes me feel happy. I try to help her too, because it is important to feel that you are a helpful person. Sometimes I fall out with her, but we make up quickly. To have a friend like Ann is very important for me.

3. What kind of character is your friend?

1) My friend is kind. He likes his pets.

2) My friend is industrious. He studies well and always gets excellent marks.

3) My friend is merry. I am never bored with him, because he has a sense of humour.

4) My friend is easy – going. He is easy to get along with.

5) My friend is considerate. He likes to take care of his little sister.

6) My friend is helpful. He helps me with my mathematics or in other subjects.
