Teacher: Dear boys and girls, dear guests, welcome to the party “Robert Burns, Scotland's Favourite Poet”. Slide 2 The party is devoted to Robert Burns, the Scottish poet. The 255th anniversary of his birth is celebrated today in the English-speaking world.
Today we’ll try to be a part of this celebration and we’ll try to imagine how the poet lived, what he loved, and what he appreciated in life.
Robert Burns is the most important Scottish poet of all the time. He became a kind of emblem of the country. Robert Burns loved his native land; he was inspired by the country’s beauty and folklore.
To understand why Scotland was so dear to Robert Burns, let’s watch the video “Scotland, the Beautiful”. Slide 3

Slide 4

Teacher: Picturesque landscapes, beautiful views! Slides 5-9 Life among green hills, vast fields and deep forests influenced the poet’s poetry. Scotland with its “high mountains covered with snow” and “green valleys below”, with its deep lakes, rivers and streams, with old castles and light music of bagpipes inspired Robert Burns to write his unforgettable verses.
Robert Burns loved his native country, its hardworking people, its unique nature. He gave his heart to Scotland. Slides 10-12

(Ученик читает стихотворение «My Heart’s in the Highlands” и перевод стихотворения C.Я.

Teacher:  Robert Burns’ life was full of poverty and hardship, but he kept in his heart love for his native land, people, his family, and friends.

Pupil 1: Slide 13 Robert Burns, Scotland’s favourite son, the Ploughman Poet, the national poet of Scotland, was born on January 25, 1759 two miles south of Ayr, in Alloway. Robert was the eldest of the seven children of William Burns and Agnes Brown.
Later he wrote in the poem “Rantin’, Rovin’ Robin” about his birth:

There was a lad was born in Kyle,
But whatna day o’ whatna style,
I doubt it's hardly worth the while
To be sae nice wi’ Robin.

Robin was a rovin' boy,
Rantin', rovin', rantin', rovin',
Robin was a rovin' boy,
Rantin', rovin', Robin!

Pupil 2: Slide 14 Robert was born in a little house built by his father. When Robbie was seven years old, William Burns sold his house and settled on the farm southeast of Alloway. Here Burns grew up in poverty and hardship. Robert wrote in the poem ‘My Father Was a Farmer”:

My father was a farmer upon the Carrick border,
And carefully he bred me in decency and order;
He bade me act a manly part, though I had ne'er a farthing;
For without an honest manly heart, no man was worth regarding.

Pupil 3: Slide 15 Robert's mother knew many Scottish songs and ballads and often sang them to her son in his childhood. His father knew the value of a good education, and he tried to give his children the best education he could. At the age of six Robbie was sent to school, but as his father could not pay for the two sons, Robert and his brother Gilbert attended school in turn. Robert had little regular schooling.  He got much of his education from his father who taught his children reading, writing, arithmetic, geography and history.
At school Robert was taught grammar, mathematics, Latin and French.

Pupil 4: Slide 16 Robert supplemented his education by continuous reading. Evenings would find him reading by candlelight or writing poems. Slide 17
He wrote about what he knew personally: the flowering fields and birds singing in the trees, the life of Scottish peasants and the cares of his own heart. Robert Burns’ best poems are songs of love and nature.
His most favourite love poem is “A Red, Red Rose”. Slide 18

A Red, Red Rose”.)

Teacher: A lot of translations of Robert Burns’ poems and songs were made by Samuil Yakovlevich Marshak. “A Red, Red Rose” was translated into Russian as well.  Vladimir Yakovlevich Shainski composed music to it. The song was chosen a soundtrack of the film “The School Waltz”. Listen to the song performed by O. Yaroshevskaya. Slide 19

Pupil 5:  Slide 20Robert Burns wrote his first poem “O, Once I Lov’d a Bonnie Lass” in 1774 when he was fifteen years old.

O, once I lov’d a bonnie lass
An’ aye I love her still,
An’ whilst that virtue warms my breast
I’ll love my handsome Nell…

A bonnie lass I will confess,
Is pleasant to the e’e,
But without some better qualities
She’s no a lass for me.

After his first poem Robert Burns wrote more than 600 verses and songs.

Pupil 6: Slide 21 At the age of twenty-seven Robert Burns published a volume of his poetry “Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect”. To his surprise it was a success and he went to Edinburgh to arrange for the second edition. Slide 22 In Edinburgh Burns became a celebrated figure among his admiring readers. But Burns knew that his social success wouldn’t last long and returned to the world that he knew so well. He took the post of government inspector for the region around Dumfries and combinated his new duties with farming and writing poetry.

Pupil 7: Slide 23 At Dumfries, married to the sweetheart of his youth Jean Armour, Robert spent the last years of his life. His best known poems and songs date from these final years.
Burns devoted to Jean many beautiful poems, such as "I love my Jean", "Bonnie Jean – A Ballad" and many others.

There was a lass, and she was fair,
At kirk or market to be seen;
When a’our fairest maids were met,
The fairest maid was bonie Jean.

Teacher: Robert Burns died at the early age. He was only thirty-seven years old, but his name is still alive. Slide 24 A lot of monuments, statues, museums throughout Britain are dedicated to Robert Burns.

Pupil 8: Slide 25 For Scotsmen Robert Burns is a symbol of national pride. That’s why every year his birthday is widely celebrated in Scotland and all over the English-speaking world. The celebration is known as Burns Night. It is usually held in the form of a supper – Burns Supper. The celebration usually begins with addressing to a haggis. During the celebration Burns’ poems are recited and Scottish bagpipers play. And what is haggis?  Slide 26
Haggis is a mixture of heart, liver and lungs of a sheep combined with oats, suet, herbs and spices, all cooked in a casing traditionally made of the animal’s stomach. Butchers usually throw in their own secret ingredients.

Teacher: Dear boys and girls, we’ll celebrate Burns Night here, in our classroom. We’ll recite Robert Burns’ poems, sing his songs in English; we’ll listen to the songs performed in Russian. It will be a kind of a concert, the concert where we’ll combine reciting of Robert Burns' verses with performing them in Russian.
We are not going to break the tradition and begin with the poem “Ode To Haggis”.

Teacher:  Slide 27 Robert Burns is a poet who was not indifferent to the fate of people. In the poem “A Man’s A Man For A’ That” he is delighted with common people, he is proud of them, their intellect and honour. To understand the idea of the poem, listen to its Russian version.

Teacher: Robert Burns always believed that one day all people would be brothers and “spring again would come to their place ’. Slide 28

Teacher:  The poet devoted a lot of beautiful and loving poems to people whom he loved. They are full of love, devotion and hope.  Burns’ verses are very tuneful that’s why they are not only recited, but they are sung as well. Slides 29-31

(Ученик исполняет песню “O, Wert Thou In The Cauld Blast” и ее аналог на русском языке «В полях под снегом и дождем». Ученики читают стихотворения: “Coming Trough The Rye”, “Whistle, And I’ll Come To You, My Lad”.

Teacher:   Slides 32-34 Some Robert Burns’ poems are performed in Russian films. I think you have seen Victor Titov’s film “Hello, I’m Your Aunt!” and Eldar Ryazanov’s film “Office Romance”. Listen to the poem “Poortith Cauld And Restless Love” and “For The Sake Of Somebody” which became songs in the films.

Teacher: “Auld Lang Syne” is one of the most widely known Burns’ works. It is sung by British people when they celebrate the beginning of the new year and during the other important occasions. At the end of Burns Supper people usually sing the song “Auld Lang Syne” as well.  Let’s sing it along. Slide 35

Teacher:  Dear friends, our party came up to the end.
Today we‘ve spoken a lot about the most favorite Scottish son, Robert Burns, his life, his poetry. We tried to understand why he is so popular among people of different countries nowadays. I think it’s because Robert Burns wrote about things which are dear to our hearts: about native land, family, friendship, duty, honour, dignity... We take to heart what was written by Robert Burns more than 200 years ago.
