Steps
1. The beginning of the lesson:
The quiz “How romantic are you?”
- Does music ever make you cry?
- Do you believe in love at first sight?
- Do you enjoy beautiful sunsets?
- Do you ever daydream?
- Do smell and sounds have special memories for you?
- Do you like poetry?
- Do you often feel lonely?
- Have you ever written a poem?
- Do you enjoy tasting new foods?
- Have you ever fallen in love with a celebrity?
How many times did you say “Yes”? Check you score:
7-10: You are a true romantic. You enjoy life to the full and easily fall in love. You are very emotional and get pleasure from beautiful sounds, sights and smells.
3-6: You are a well-balanced person who lives in harmony with reality. You don`t often fall in love but when you do, your feelings are deep.
Less than 3: You are a cool person. Nothing excites you very much and you never let your head rule your heart. But you may have trouble understanding other people`s feelings.
Guess, what holiday is going to be?

Motto
Valentine`s Day is a time to celebrate love and friendship. Love and friendship are very important parts of our lives. It should not seem at all strange, therefore, that there is a holiday devoted to love and lovers, friendship and friends.
2. Phonetic training:
What poems about Valentine`s Day do you know?
Examples of Poems:
Love (by W J Smith) It`s Valentine’s Day (by J Prelutsky) I love you, I like you,
I really do like you.
I do not want to strike you,
I do not want to shove you.
I do want to like you,
I do want to love you;
And like you and love you
And love you and love you. It`s Valentine`s Day,
and in the street
there`s freezing rain,
and slush, and sleet,
the wind is fierce,
the skies are grey,
I don`t think I`ll
go out today.But here inside
the weather`s warm,
there is no trace
of wind or storm,
and you just made
the morning shine-
you said you`d be
my Valentine.I may not always tell you
What I’m feeling deep inside
The emotions and the feelings
That I sometimes tend to hideBut I’m really proud and pleased
To know that you are mine
And I hope that you still love me
My Darling Valentine!Do you love me
Or do you not?
You told me once
But I forgot.
On Valentine`s Day (by O.L. Price)
On Valentine’s Day
I made a heart,
Red paper and white lace.
And wrote “I like you”
On the front
And drew a cupid`s face.
Secretly
I put it in
The desk of my best friend.
She printed “too!”
Behind my words
And gave it back again.
3. Listening:
What do you know about Valentine`s Day?
Why is it so called?
Valentine`s Day is a traditional celebration. It is not a religious or a legal holiday. After Christmas it is one of the most popular holidays.
This is the legend of how St. Valentine`s Day began.
When the Roman emperor Claudius 2 needed soldiers, he made a law against marrying because he felt that marriage made men want to stay home instead of fighting wars.
A priest named Valentine seeing the love of young couples, married them secretly. But he was discovered and condemn to death.
Even in prison, Valentine showed his love for everyone. He met a young girl in prison who was blind. Valentine restored her sight. Just before his death on February 14, he sent her a message signed “From your Valentine”
So Valentine gave his love to help lovers.
Nobody knows for sure if this legend true, but we do know Valentine`s Day is a wonderful day.
- When do we celebrate Valentine`s Day?
- Why did the Roman emperor Claudius 2 make a law against marring?
- Why was a priest condemned to death?
- Why do we celebrate Valentine` s Day on the 14th of February?
- Do you like this holiday?
- Do you celebrate it?

Symbols of Valentine’s Day
Heart
Emotions are feelings such a love, happiness, anger, or fear. A long time ago, people believed that all the emotions were found in the heart. In later years, they thought only the emotion of love was connected with the heart. The heart is still a symbol of love, and because of this, it is also a symbol of Valentine’s Day.
Red rose
The rose was the favorite flower of Venus, the Roman goodness of love. Red is a color that stands for strong feelings. This is why the red rose is a flower of love.
Ribbon
Ribbons go back to the days when ladies gave ribbons to their favorite knights when they went to war. On Valentine`s Day a ribbon means that a person is tired up.
Lace
Lace symbolizes a net for catching a lover`s heart. So if you get a Valentine with a piece of lace, it means that the person who has sent it is passionately in love with you.
Cupid
Cupid, the Roman god of love, is a symbol of passionate, tender, or playful love. His arrows are invisible and his targets are our hearts. When his arrow hits your heart, you`ll fall hopelessly, and helplessly, in love with someone.
Love knot
A love knot is a series of winding and interlacing loops with no beginning and no end. It is a symbol of endless love. People made love knots from ribbon or drew them on paper. Often, a message was written on the love knot. The message had no beginning or end. It could be repeated endlessly.
Rings
In some countries, men and women exchange rings when they become engaged or marry. Two or three hundred years ago, Valentine`s Day was a popular day for giving an engagement ring. An engagement ring usually had a stone or jewel set in it. Diamonds are common in today`s engagement rings.
Gloves
Years ago, when a man proposed marriage to a woman, he ‘’asked for her hand.’’ The hand becomes a symbol of marriage and love. Soon gloves also became a symbol of love.
Lovebirds and doves
Lovebirds are colorful parrots found in Africa. Most have red bills. They are called lovebirds because they sit closely together in pairs.
Doves were thought to be favorite birds of Venus. They remain with the same mates all their lives. The males and females both care for their babies. Because these birds are symbols of loyalty and love they are also symbols of Valentine`s Day.
5. Role-play “Be my Valentine!’’
by Betty J. Belanus
Cast of characters: Boris Jones, Karen Fair, The Valentine Fairy, Barry Jones, four animals (cat, bat, hippo, monkey)
SCENE ONE: OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL
BORIS: There's Karen. She's so beautiful! (Sighs) I wish she would like me.
(Karen fixes her hair)
KAREN: There, that's better! (Goes offstage)
BORIS: (sighs again) There's only week until Valentine's Day. Oh, how I wish Karen would be my Valentine!
(A loud "poof"! And the Valentine Fairy appears)
BORIS: Who are you?
VALENTINE FAIRY: Why, I'm the Valentine Fairy, of course! Didn't you call me?
BORIS: Did I?
V.F.: Didn't you say "I wish someone would be my Valentine?"
BORIS: I guess so.
V.F.: Well, those are the magic words that make me appear!
BORIS: Wait a minute. I never heard of the Valentine Fairy before! (Turns the audience) Did you ever hear of the Valentine Fairy before? (Waits for an answer)
V.F.: So, just because you never heard of me doesn't mean I'm not real. Do you want this girl to be your Valentine, or what?
BORIS: Yes, yes! What do I have to do?
V.F.: First, you have to be near the girl. Then, you have to say this magic poem:
Be my Valentine,
Wallee, Wallee, Woo,
Now and all the time,
Tippy, tippy, too.
Do you think you can remember that?
BORIS: Sure! That's all there is to it?
V.F.: Yes! Now, good luck!
(Smaller poof and the Valentine Fairy disappears offstage)
BORIS: (to himself) Be my Valentine, zippee, dippy, do. Now and all the time, boppy, sloppy, sloo. Was that it? No, wait.
(Karen comes back onstage)
BORIS: Oh, here comes Karen. Let's see if I can make this work! (Comes over to her) Hi, Karen!
KAREN: Oh, uh, hi, Boris. (Looks at her watch) Oh! Look at the time, I have to go!
BORIS: Wait a minute! I have something to tell you! (Clears his throat)
Be my Valentine,
Lippee loppy loo,
Now and all the time,
Knockee, knockee nu.
(Poof! And Karen turns into a cat!)
CAT: Meow!!
BORIS: Oh, my gosh! I think I used the wrong magic words! I'd better try that again. Be my Valentine, crippy, crippy, crue – wait, that's not right! What are those words again – (turns to the audience) – Can you remember the magic words?
(Waits till the audience says something) Okay, I'll try those.
(Poof! And Karen turns into a bat!)
BAT: Screech, screech!
BORIS: Oh, no that's not right either. Let's try something else. Now and all the time, dippy, wippy, loo.
(Poof! And Karen turns into a hippo!)
HIPPO: Grunt, grunt!
BORIS: Oh, man – this is getting worse and worse. What are those words again? Can't any of you out there remember? (Waits for response from audience)
(Poof! Hippo turns into a monkey!)
MONKEY: (makes monkey sounds and jumps around)
(Boris's brother Barry comes on stage)
BARRY: Cool! A monkey! Just what I need for show and tell in my class! Thanks, Boris! (Grabs monkey and runs off stage)
BORIS: Wait! That's not really a monkey! What do I do now? (Goes off stage)
SCENE TWO: SCHOOL ROOM
BARRY: This is going to be so cool. Nobody else is going to have a monkey for show and tell!
MONKEY: (jumps up and down and makes monkey sounds)
BARRY: I'll just put this monkey up here on this shelf until it's time for show and tell. (Puts the monkey "up on shelf" – the shelf is actually a chair, not too high)
BORIS: (bursts into the classroom, out of breath) Barry! Where's Karen – I mean that monkey!
BARRY: Boris, what are you doing here?
BORIS: I need that monkey! It's not really a monkey.
BARRY: Have you gone nuts? Look (points to the monkey) – That's a monkey if I ever saw one. (To audience) Isn't that a monkey?
BORIS: Come on down, monkey, I mean Karen! (Monkey jumps up and down)
BARRY: Leave my monkey alone! (Brothers fight and shake shelf. Monkey starts falling)
(Suddenly, monkey turns back into Karen as it is falling off stage) (Boris goes down and "catches" her)
KAREN: (appears on stage) Oh, Boris! You caught me! You saved me! I love you! (Kisses him)
BARRY: What the – ???
KAREN: I had this awful dream that I turned into a monkey. And then I was falling out of a tree. Then I woke and and I was falling! And you caught me. Boris, you're my hero! Can I be your Valentine?
BORIS: Sure! (They kiss)
(Boris, Karen, and Barry leave the stage)
(Valentine Fairy appears)
V.F.: Good thing those animal spells only last a short time.
(Whole cast comes on stage and says) HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!!!
THE END
6. A Fortune-Telling Game
Think of five or six names of boys or girls you might marry. As you twist the stem of an apple, recite the names until the stem comes off. You will marry the person whose name you were saying when the stem fell off.
