Ведущий: Dear friends. You are watching sport news on Children's Channel. Today we'll tell you about a sporting event taking place in Kelowna, a city in Canada.

Today Kelowna celebrates the start of a big sporting event, the 5th International Children's Winter Games, which are held from January 26 to January 31. (the 6th International Children's Winter Games will take place in Ufa, Russia in 2013)

The founder of the International Children's Games was Metod Klemenc Metod Klemenc. He is a physical teacher from Slovenia. He wanted to promote peace and friendship through sports to the world's youth. He organized the first International Children's Games and Cultural Festival in 1968.

Teams from nine European cities participated in it. Nowadays this event is held every year and children aged 12 to 15 from cities around the world participate in a variety of sports.

It has become the world's largest international multi-sport youth games. This event is also recognized by the International Olympic Committee.

Kelowna is the first host city for the International Children's Winter Games outside of Europe. Seven winter sports are included in the 2011 International Children's Winter Games. These are figure skating, curling, alpine skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing. Two new sports, ice hockey and speed skating, are offered in Kelowna.

Kelowna is offering curling as one of the many sports for young athletes to compete in. Curling is a popular sport where two teams of four players slide heavy stones across a sheet of ice towards the house. This is a circular target marked on the ice. The purpose is to accumulate the highest score for a game. Curling is a game of strategy, tactics and skill. It is sometimes called "Chess on ice".

Youth is able to participate in alpine skiing. This is the sport of sliding down snow-covered hills on skis with fixed-heel bindings. There are four disciplines in alpine skiing races: slalom, giant slalom, super giant slalom, and downhill.

Cross-country skiing is a sport in which participants propel themselves across snow-covered terrain using skis and poles. In Kelowna participating cities may enter teams to compete in Classic Technique, Free Technique and Free Technique Relays.

Figure skating is an Olympic sport in which individuals, pairs, or groups perform spins, jumps, footwork and other moves on ice skates. Kelowna's figure skating events will consist of both a short program and a freestyle program. There will be a gala of all skaters on the final day!

For the first time the winter games include ice hockey! Ice hockey is a team sport played on ice, in which skaters use sticks to shoot a puck into the opponent's net. The game is played between two teams of six players each. Kelowna is excited to host a boys and girls hockey tournament.

Speed skating is a form of ice skating in which the competitors race each other in traveling a certain distance on skates. Types of speed skating are long track speed skating, short track speed skating, and marathon speed skating.

Big White Ski Resort will host the Kelowna 2011 snowboarding events. Snowboarding is a sport that involves descending a slope that is covered with snow on a snowboard. It is attached to a rider's feet using special boots.
