T: You can read opinions of different people. The first group is to find arguments for the Internet and the second group – arguments against.
- You can find the latest information quickly and easily.
- Many children use it for entertainment, not for learning.
- You can learn about other countries and cultures.
- You can make new friends in chat groups.
- Some sites are not suitable for children.
- With so much information, it’s difficult to find what you want.
- There is too much advertising instead of real information.
- You can send e-mail fast and cheaply.
- Making ‘chat friends’ differs from meeting real people.
- You can use the Internet to read newspapers and magazines, play games, listen to music.
- Some children become ‘mouse potatoes very quickly’ and live in the virtual world.
- You can plan your holiday and buy things.
Т: Now present your arguments to the class.
T: We need some words to link the sentences and to sound our essay better. Do you remember how they are called? (linking words)
Which of these linking words can we use for Introduction, Giving points for, Giving points against, Concluding, Giving a personal opinion?
Personally, What is more, to sum up, however, On the other hand, Some people think that…, Secondly, I think, Moreover, On the one hand, It is said that, In conclusion, Firstly, Besides, In my opinion, It goes without saying that… .
T: Use linking words speaking about advantages and disadvantages of the Internet
SLIDE 7
T: Do you remember what happened in the end of the cartoon?
Which of the sentences summarizes the idea of the cartoon best of all?
T: In conclusion we should first sum up the topic and then express our own opinion. Which of the opinions is close to your own?
- As for me I would be lost, helpless and alone without the Internet. I don’t know how people survived without it!
- I consider that the trick is not to become ‘a mouse potato’. It’s important to learn to use the Internet intelligently.
- Although the Internet offers a lot of advantages, we shouldn’t forget that it cannot replace a real life full of friends, books, libraries, museums and galleries.
