Pupil 1 (slides 1, 2)

Today we are going to speak about one of the most beautiful countries in the world. People even call it the Emerald island.

Pupil 2 (slide 3)

The Republic of Ireland occupies about five sixths of the island of Ireland, which lies across the Irish Sea from Great Britain. The British controlled the area for about 750 years, until 1921, when they made southern Ireland a dominion. Ireland became an independent republic in 1949. Northern Ireland, however, which occupies the rest of the island, has remained a political part of the United Kingdom.

Pupil 1 (slide 4)

The Republic of Ireland covers 27,133 square miles (70,273 square kilometers). In the early 21st century, the Republic of Ireland had a population of nearly 4 million.

Pupil 4 (slide 5)

The capital of the country is Dublin. It was founded as a Viking Settlement in ancient times. The writings of the Greek astronomer and cartographer Ptolemey mentioned people living in this place even in around 140 AD. Dublin became the key center of military and judicial power after the Norman Invasion. Since medieval times it has been Ireland’s main City for most of the country’s history.

Pupil 5 (slide 6)

Ireland’s flag has a rich history. This flag has three equal stripes that illustrates the Irish political landscape. It was officially recognized in 1848 the year the flag was first unfurled.

Green signifying Irish Catholics and the republican cause
White representing the hope for peace between them
Orange standing for Irish Protestants

Orange is associated with Northern Irish Protestants because of Willliam of Orange (William III), the King of England, Scotland, and Ireland who in 1690 defeated the deposed King James II, a Roman Catholic, in the fateful Battle of the Boyne near Ireland's capital of Dublin. William's victory secured Protestant dominance over the island. Sometimes called Orangemen, Protestants in Northern Ireland celebrate the anniversary of the battle each July 12th.

Pupil 6 (slide 6)

There is also an unofficial Irish Flag. Green represents the Irish Catholic nationalists of the south and the shamrocks and verdant landscapes, but more importantly, green symbolizes revolution. An earlier, unofficial Irish flag the gold harp on a green background served from 1798 until the early twentieth century as a symbol of nationalism.

Pupils 7-9 (slide 7)

The Shamrock is probably the most recognized symbol of Ireland.. There are several reasons for this. First, the shamrock is believed to have been used by St. Patrick to explain the concept of the Catholic Holy Trinity. Since Ireland today is over 90% Catholic, this is a natural symbol. The green of the shamrock plant is often used to remind us of the “40 shades of green” seen on the Irish hillsides. And the shamrock (growing freely as clover throughout the world) was an inexpensive symbol for the very poor Irish to wear as a way of celebrating their history and traditions.

The harp has historically been used as an official symbol of Ireland and has been in Irish “Coats of Arms” for many centuries. Even today, the small harp can be seen on Irish coins, flags, and other official Irish symbols.

The traditional wedding ring of the Irish since the 17th Century, the Royal Claddagh ring is today worn as a universal symbol of love, loyalty, friendship and fidelity, and of their Irish heritage. Claddagh design consists of a heart, symbolizing love, hands that symbolize friendship and the crown for loyalty. They have become famous as a popular choice for traditional wedding rings from what it symbolizes. When the ring is worn on the right hand with the design facing outwards, away from the body, it usually represents that person is single and possibly looking for love. When in love with someone the ring would be still worn on the right hand but with the design facing inwards. For someone engaged the ring is worn on the left hand with the design facing outwards, after marriage the ring should be worn on the left with the design facing inwards.

Pupil 1 (Slide 8)

The patron saint of Ireland is St. Patrick, who lived in the 5th century. He was one of those people, who brought Christianity to Ireland. Little is known about him, but there are a lot of legends.

He is said to explain the essence of Trinity with the help of a shamrock leaf. That’s why the Irish always wear them on the day of his honour. Another Legend says that Saint Patrick drove the snakes from Ireland. On the island there are no snakes which often symbolized evel in religion. Driving the snakes from Ireland was symbolic of bringing Christianity to Ireland and ending the old pagan religious practices. . It is believed that St. Patrick met with the Druids convinced them to change their beliefs accepting baptism into Christianity.

Pupil 7 (Slide 9)

The Irish all over the world take part in the St. Patrick's Day Parades that are hosted in thousands of cities around the world. It is even held in Moscow.

Pupil 2 (Slide 10)

We can’t help saying about Irish dances. Irish performance dancing is traditionally referred to as stepdance. Irish stepdance was popularized in 1994 by the world-famous show “Riverdance”. It is notable for its rapid leg movements, body and arms being kept largely stationary. Most stepdancers also perform and compete using traditional forms of dancing.

Why are the arms kept stationary? Remember the history of thy country. The Irish fought for the their independence for many centuries. They hid their weapon in the sleeves and didn’t put it aside even dancing.

Let’s watch it a little.

Pupil 4 (slide 12)

The country is famous for its blessings. Some blessing maybe hundreds of years old when others could have been created last week. Irish blessings are about welcoming, warmth and turning a negative situation into a positive one. Its no wonder the people of Ireland tried to stay positive with its long history of misery. Here are some examples of Irish Blessing you may see.

May the roads rise to meet you,
May the wind be at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rain fall soft upon your fields,
And, until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

May you be poor in misfortunes,
and rich in blessings,
May you know nothing but happiness,
from this day forward,
May good luck be your friend,
In whatever you do,
And may trouble be always,
A stranger to you.

May you always have work for your hands to do,
May your pockets hold always a coin or two,
May the sun shine bright on your windowpane,
May the rainbow be certain to follow each rain,
May the hand of a friend always be near you,
And may God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.

May flowers always line your path and sunshine light your day.
May songbirds serenade you every step along the way.
May a rainbow run beside you in a sky that's always blue.
And may happiness fill your heart each day your whole life through.
May the sun shine all day long,
everything go right and nothing wrong.

May those you love bring love back to you,
and may all the wishes you wish come true.
May the friendships you make be those which endure
and all of your Grey clouds be small ones for sure.
And trusting in Him to Whom we all pray,
may a song fill your heart every step of the way.
Wherever you go and whatever you do,
May the luck of the Irish be there with you.

I wish healing upon you,
The healing of Mary with me,
Mary, Michael and Brighid,
Be with me all three.

Поскольку Ирландия была последней страной в нашем сценарии, мы закончили наш фестиваль демонстрацией irishblessing_ru [1]. Поверьте, в зале не осталось ни одного человека с сухими глазами.
