Teacher:- I think nobody can imagine our life without arts. Some kinds of arts, such as painting, dancing and music appeared very early, at the prehistoric times. But the years passed and arts were developing with the humanity. And nowadays it takes different forms such as music, painting, dancing, architecture, poetry, cinema, theatre, literature.
As to the cinema I should say that people don’t go to the cinema regularly nowadays. They prefer to stay at home and watch films drinking tea or coffee in their armchairs. But cinema is still popular among teens. The cinema’s possibilities are unlimited. The cinema’s industry is the most developed in the USA, Hollywood, but every country has its own cinematography too.

P1: The 20th century may be called the century of film making. Cinema and TV films become an important part of our lives. But not everyone knows when and where cinematography appeared.(fragment)
P2: The development of cinematography brought to life the world cinema empire called HOLLYWOOD.
The world capital of filmed entertainment Los Angeles has been a lot of thins over the past 100 years. First, it was a little city with orange forest and great weather. But one day in 1908 a group of people from Chicago came to Los Angeles to shoot a film. Since that day a lot of directors, producers, actors and thousand of other workers have been coming to Los Angeles. In 1911 the first studio appeared in Hollywood.
In the 1920s Hollywood made 80% of the world’s films. Silent and black and white films of those early years starring Mary Pickford and Charlie Chaplin were forced out by sound films in the middle of the 1920s. Full-length films came up to take place of short films. And the first colour film, Gone with the wind, was shot in 1939. This film brought a great success to Vivien Leigh and Clack Gable who starred in the film. The number of the studios grew very quickly. They combined in large corporations and now the biggest film companies are MGM, Paramount, 20th Century Fox, Columbia Pictures, Warner Brothers and Universals.
The first genres of American films were melodrama; western and comedy, later appeared adventure and historical films. But now the range of genres is much richer. Hollywood got the name of the factory of dreams. It is associated with wealth and paradise of sun and palm trees. But it is only a facade for a darker truth.
P2: There are some names from the film making industry that are known all over the world. What are these people famous for?

-I like science fiction films because they are stuffed with events and have a mysterious plot. They are usually unrealistic and full of special effects. They are about unreal and supernatural things. What I like about them is that they keep you in suspense and grab your attention. I think they are magnificent and really impressive.
-Historical films are full of special effects and realistic. They have fights of different types.
The stories are dynamic. Such films catch your attention. They are really exciting. They teach you to defense justice. I think that they are extremely great and wonderful.
As for me, I do love action films. Action films are very dynamic and exciting. More than that they grab your attention from the first scene. They help to cool off. They have mysterious plot, they teach you to defense justice and to be strong and brave.. They are impressive. They demonstrate the physical abilities of man.
Teacher: - What Russian films would you advise your foreign friend to see if he/she is interested in…
If he is interested in detective stories I’d advise him to see “Mesto Vstrechi izmenit nelzya” If he is interested in comedies I’d advise him to see the film with Yuri Nikulin. If he is interested in historical films I’d advice him to see “The Countess de Monsoro” As for me I really like films by E. Ryazanov. They are kind and romantic. They are about ordinary people. They teach you to believe in love. They are absolutely wonderful. (fragment)
Teacher:- People can’t live without music. There is music everywhere at home, in a concert-hall, in parks and in the streets. Music is a kind of art which reflects life because it reflects people’s ideas and emotions.
There are different forms of music and among them are classical music, pop music, jazz-bands and such new trends of music as heavy metal, rap, reggae, punk rock, R’ n’ r and others.
For some people music is a harmless way to relax and have fun. As many people as many opinions. I can’t understand why some people take music so seriously. They criticize new records, singers, and songs. As for me I think that music should give me a delight of pleasure and excitement. I think that theatre and cinema can’t exist without music.
P8 - Rock and pop music is extremely popular, especially among younger people. In the 60s and 70s groups such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd became very popular and successful.
The Beatles, with their style of singing new and exciting, their wonderful sense of humor became the most successful pop group the world has ever known. Many of the famous songs written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney are still popular. (fragment)
A song “I Should Have Known Better“ (Lennon/McCartney)
I should have known better with a girl like you, that I
Would love everything that you do; and I do, hey, hey, hey, and I do.
Whoa, oh, I never realized what a kiss could be, this could
Only happen to me; can't you see, can't you see,
That when I tell you that I love you, oh, you're gonna say
You love me too, hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo, oh,
And when I ask you to be mine, you're gonna say you love me too.
You love me too, you love me too.
Teacher:- British groups often set new trends in music. New staff and styles continue to appear. One of the most popular contemporary musician and composers is Andrew Lloyd Webber.
The musicals and rock operas by A. L. Webber have been a great success both in Britain and overseas.
His modern musicals attract young people. Its unusual plot, characters and brilliant music impress the public very much.
”The Phantom of the Opera” is one of the best musicals written by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Now we are going to watch “The Phantom of the opera”. It was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber. They say he is a king of modern theatrical music. (fragment)
Teacher:- Well, you know that there are some people who enjoy going to the theatre and listening to operas. Try to answer the next questions.
T: Did you like this extract of the opera?
P: Oh, yes, I did. It was wonderful.
P: The theatre building is magnificent. The heroes’ costumes are absolutely splendid.
P: I saw a lot of flowers in Christine’s room because she was a good actress. She was a
beautiful girl and there were a lot of young people who were in love with her
T: It’s a good point. Were there a lot of flowers in her room? Why?
P: There were a lot of flowers in Christine’s room because she was a good actress. She
was a beautiful girl and there were a lot of young people who were in love with her
T: OK! Maybe the second question is a bit more difficult for you? Who are the main
characters?
P: Phantom, Christine and Raoul are the main characters of the opera.
T: That’s right. Who is in love with whom?
P: I think Raoul is in love with Christine. Christine is in love with Raoul but she
understood that they had no future. Phantom loves Christine too.
T: Exactly! Why did Christine touch the book in her room?
P: She wanted to meet Phantom. I think Phantom always asked her to sing a song with him
because his voice called Christine and he was inside her mind.
T: That’s a very good argument. Why did Phantom call their song as a strange duet?
P: I think that his power over Christine grows stronger when they sing together or when he
asks her to sing louder and louder. He calls her his angel of music.
T: That’s an interesting suggestion. Have you got anything to add?
- I have been to a theatre several times. I do like theatre. I prefer comedies. They put me in a joyful mood. But I have never seen rock opera. Some people say that it is a drug, but I don’t agree with them. I was so involved in the action that I forgot that I was watching a play.

Teacher: - You seem to have understood it very well.
I don’t think there is anything more to say on the subject. In conclusion I would say that all of you worked hard. I am satisfied with your work. And I must say, "The more you live, the more you see, the more you see, the more you know". And you will receive such marks for the lessons.
