I Beginning

  1. Warming-up activity.
  2. Discuss some English proverbs: “Business before pleasure”, “Money saved – money gained”.

  3. Introduction.
  4. Teacher: Today we start reading the text “Business”. After you have read and studied this text you should be able to:

    1. Explain what the word “business” means.
    2. Define the greatest determinant of business career.
    3. Suggest the range of skills for prospering.
    4. Illustrate, if possible, the difference between people engaged in acting and talking.
    5. Make a list of numerous spheres of activities in economics.

II Follow-up

Activity 1: Speaking practice

Task 1: Study the key words. Read the text again and answer the questions:

1. Are all people cut out to own a business?
2. What questions do you have to answer before your own business?
3. Are you the right person to take ultimate steps?
4. What chances of success do you have if you are used to blaming external factors for your failure?
5. Business is a stressful experience, isn’t it?

Task 2: Paraphrase the following sentences using the words from the text:

  1. Not everyone is suited to own and manage a business.
  2. Why do some people never take the decisive step?
  3. You need to be able to face a failure and use the results of the lessons.
  4. Don’t think that your decisions have no influence on the current events.
  5. If you find it difficult to treat people friendly you will not have any chance of prospering.

Task 5: Try a dialogue. Consider the following situation:
You’ve made up your mind to be in business. Your mother is strongly against. She
wants you to be a doctor. Both try persuasion.

At home: Read the text “Business” again. Find the sentences which illustrate the most important ingredients of the person’s career.

III Rounding - off

1. Summary of the lesson:

Teacher: Today we have read and studied the text “Business”. You have learned that the word “business” means “being busy”. Before running your own business everyone has to answer the question if he or she is the right sort of person to succeed in his or her business.

At the next lesson we shall read and study the text “Career and Course Resources”.
