My friends! Today the pupils of the 8th and the 9th forms are ready to play a very interesting game. It is called «Brain ring». I hope you’ll like it. So let’s start.

The rules of the game are quite simple. We’ll have 5 rounds, you are to answer the questions connected with the topic “The UK”. You are to respect your group-mates and not to shout. No doubt, winning is the aim, but it is only the game. Don’t forget that. The certain number of points will be awarded for every correct answer. You have one minute to discuss the question. If you know the answer, raise your hand.

Round IPuzzle Time

You should do a puzzle now: “make up” a country, the UK, from several parts. The team that will do it the first will get a point. Then you are to choose questions (by chance) and answer them. The team that answers the questions correctly will get a point. If you can’t give the answer, then other teams can get a chance to have the additional point.

Questions

1) Where is the UK situated? (показать на карте)Why is the UK also called Great Britain, England or the British Isles?

2) How is the British flag called? Describe it. Match pictures of the flags to the countries.

3) Match the national costumes  to the countries(раздать изображения костюмов). What languages do people speak? What nationalities live in each part of the UK?

4) What is the UK washed by? (показать на карте)What is the climate like?

1) Great Britain is situated on the British Isles-a large group of island lying off the north-western coast of Europe. Great Britain is the name of the largest island of the British Isles. Of the four countries which make up the UK, England is the largest.

2) The British flag is called the Union Jack. The upright red cross is the cross of St George, the patron saint of England. The white diagonal cross  is the cross of St Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland. The red diagonal cross is the cross of St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.

3)The official language of the UK is English. The English live in England, they speak English. The Scottish (the Scots) live in Scotland, they speak Scottish. The Welsh live in Wales, they speak Welsh. The Irish live in Northern Ireland, they speak Irish.

4)The UK is washed by the Atlantic Ocean in the north-west,  by the North Sea in the East. The UK is separated from the continent by the English Channel and the Strait of Dover in the south. The Irish Sea is between Ireland and Great Britain.  Great Britain enjoys the humid and mild marine climate with warm winters and cool summers.

Listening

Now listen to me carefully, I’m going to give you some information about symbols of the countries the UK consists of. What floral symbol am I speaking about? You should write your answers (the name of the country and its symbol) on the sheet of paper. If you are right, take a point. The total number of points is 4.

1) It is a wild plant. Once the Scandinavians planned to attack a village. But since the villagers knew they were coming, they started to prepare for war. Late at night, the Scandinavians came in their bare feet so as not to awaken the warriors in the village. But the thorns of the plant hurt their bare feet. Their howls of pain pierced the silence and the villagers awoke to fight the enemy. (Scotland-a thistle)

2) The patron saint of this country ate only it and bread. In memory of this Christian saint, this plant became the symbol. Flowers which burst into flames by the 1st of March celebrate the revered  saint of the country.(Wales-a leek, a daffodil)

3) This flower decorated the arms of the House of Lancaster. The Lancastrians argued for the throne of the country with the Yorkists. The war for the throne between the Lancastrians and the Yorkists  lasted 30 years (1455 — 1485). When the Lancastrians won the war, their arms became the symbol of the whole country.(England-a red rose)

4) It is a three-leaved plant similar to clover. A tale tells of how the patron saint used the three-leafed plant to explain the Trinity. He used it in his sermons to represent how the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit could all exist as separate elements of the same entity. His followers adopted the custom of wearing this plant on his feast day. (Ireland-shamrock)
