I. Организационный момент

What date is it today? What holiday is it today in the UK?

The 88th anniversary of Queen’s Birthday. What do you know about English Queen?

1. When do the English celebrate the Queen’s birthday?

The Queen has 2 birthdays – her real one is on the 21st of April, and an official one, on the second Saturday of June each year.

2. What is the full name of Queen Elizabeth?

Queen’s full name is Elizabeth Alexandra Mary. As a child she called herself “ Lilibet ”, a name that members of her family still use.

3. How many children does Elizabeth II have?

She has 3 sons and a daughter.

4. Where does the royal family live in London?

They live in Buckingham Palace.

5. What can you say about the Queen’s parents?

Her father was King George VI, and her mother’s name was also Elizabeth. People call her Queen’s mother.

Until she was 10 years old she didn’t know that one day she would be a queen. In 1936 her father became King George VI and Elizabeth became heiress to the throne. English people usually say: “ Every family has a skeleton in the cupboard ” Let’s have a talk about the royal secrets.

3. What can you say about Edward VIII and his love? Why did he refuse of the throne?

But Edward was in love with an American woman called Wallis Simpson and wanted to marry her. It isn’t easy for a British king to marry. As the King is Head of the Church of England, he cannot marry a divorced woman. Edward’s love was American and divorced twice!

4. Who became a new King of England?

The second son was Albert. Albert or Bertie, as his friends called him, was shy. It was difficult for him to make speeches. He did not expect to become king, he chose the Navy. He married Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and they had two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret.

5. Why and when do the Royal family change their last name?

The British Royal Family changed their last name Saxe-Coburg-Gotha during the First World War because it sound too German. Anti-German feeling in the country was so strong that King George V dropped all his German titles and changed the family name to Windsor.

Why did King George V changed the family name to Windsor after the name of the castle?
