Christianity.

The Britons accepted Christianity in AD 313. The Anglo-Saxons and Jutes were pagans by the time they appeared on the British Isles, so they didn’t believe in the Christian God. Step by step they accepted Christianity.

The Celtic bishops and monks in the North went from village to village and brought Christianity to common people.

In the South people followed St. Augustine who was sent from Rome (the centre of the Roman Catholic Church). He was interested to bringing people to the new faith.

The both churches argued about many things. A Synod (a meeting of priests) held in Witby, Yorkshire, in 664 settled the arguments and the two groups of Christians united.

Saxon kings helped the church to grow, but the Church also helped kings. Monasteries became places of learning and education.

The king who made most use of the Church was Alfred the Great, who ruled from 871 to 899. He wanted to educate his people, he ordered monks to start writing the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle (a history of Britain from the birth of Christ) and during his reign the Bible was translated into Anglo-Saxon, which was very important because common people didn’t understand Latin.
