And now let’s listen your schoolmates who prepared some information about animals in Kemerovo region.

Pupil 1:

The brown bear

The bear lives in the forests of the Kuzbass, mainly in the black taiga, where cedars and wild berries grow. This large animal eats everything: berries, plants, smaller animals, frogs, fish. Bears are very fond of honey. In autumn the bear makes a den in an out-of-the-way place of taiga and sleeps the whole winter.

In January and February a she-bear gives birth to one or two bear cubs. They live with their mother for two years and help her take care of newly-born brothers and sisters. Though bears are tall (2 metres) and clumsy animals, they can run very quickly, climb trees and swim. They live 50 years.

Pupil 2:

The wolf

Ever since Little Red Riding Hood, the wolf has been personified as a devilish creature and a threat to man. But more recently people’s attitudes to wolves have changed. This great predator eats mainly sick animals: hares, elks, mice, carrion. It performs sanitary functions, and so it’s useful in its own way. Mainly wolves were killed in Kemerovo region in the 1960s-1970s, but now wolves aren’t killed in the numbers they once were - because they keep the natural ecological balance.

The wolf looks like a sheepdog. It lives in the steppe, small forests or tundra and prefers open spaces. It does not live in taiga because of deep snow. From spring to autumn a couple of wolves leads a settled way of life, keeping to their den. In late autumn wolves gather in packs of 12-15 animals. There are always male and female “leaders” and every wolf knows its place in the social order. Packs of wolves howl together in a kind of ceremony, usually at dawn or dusk.

Pupil 3:

The fox

The fox is one of the most common animals of our region. It is a beautiful and graceful animal, famous for its red fur. The fox eats rodents, that damage crops, and so it is a very useful animal. It also eats frogs, lizards, insects, birds. It usually hunts at dawn or at dusk. Its way of hunting is very interesting. In winter it walks on hind legs, turns and leaps - it looks like dancing, but it is not - it is a way of hunting mice. Its real dance begins only in spring, when it walks on its hind legs for some time. This fox’s dance gave name to the popular dance “foxtrot” (fox’s step).

Pupil 4:

The badger

The badger is a squat animal with a long (90 centimetres) body, grey fur and yellowish-white stripes on the head. Its strong paws help him dig holes in the ground, dig roots and defend itself. But the badger is a peaceful animal and does not attack anybody. The badger lives in mixed forest, steppe and mountain bushes. Some generations of badgers live in the holes with many tunnels for many years. The badger is a clean and cautious animal. In summer, spring and autumn it usually sleeps in the daytime and leaves its hole only at night, that is why it is not easy to meet it. In winter it sleeps all the time. The badger eats insects, frogs, lizards, snakes, seeds, roots. Badger hunt is banned in our region, because these animals eat larvae of may-beetles and rodents.

Pupil 5:

The lynx

The lynx is the biggest cat. It has a long body (1 metre), a short tail and long legs. Lynxes are not numerous in Kemerovo region - there are about 500 of them now. The lynx leads migratory life, running 5 to 15 kilometres a day in search of prey. It is clever, brave and agile. The lynx is a very good hunter. It climb trees, runs and leaps very well, can see in the dark and has very good hearing and smell. It usually attacks in the evening or in the morning, seldom in the daytime. The lynx hunts hares, mice, birds and larger animals. Young lynxes look like kittens, but begin hunting birds at the age of two-three weeks and start migratory life at the age of two months.

Pupil 6:

The otter

The Otter is a valuable animal. It lives on the banks of rivers and lakes because it eats fish, frogs, mollusks, rodents and waterfowl. Since it catches mostly sick fish, the otter is very useful. It performs sanitary function in the rivers and lakes. It can swim and dive very well but finds it difficult to walk.

Pupil 7:

The pole-cat

The pole-cat is a big, agile and strong animal, which lives in the steppe, where there are many rodents. The pole-cat is very useful because it kills rodents that damage crops. The pole-cat can run 20 kilometres a day in search of prey. A couple of pole-cats can kill 160 rodents in tow months.

Pupil 8:

The elk

Several kinds of deer live in the forests of Kemerovo region, the largest of them is the elk. It is 2 metres tall, the body is 3 metres long. The elk weighs 500 kilos. The clumsy-looking animal is quick and agile. The elk lives in taiga and eats leaves , the branches and bark of asps and willows in summer and branches of pines and abieses in winter. The elk’s hooves, which move apart, enable it to walk in the marshland and snow. Beautiful antlers adorn the male’s head. But every year at the beginning of winter the elk sheds them. The elk is tamable.

Человек,
Богатырскою силой
играючи,
Должен помнить про
тихие жалобы
заячьи
И притом, своему зная
цену величью,
Быть в ответе за
каждую песенку птичью!
