The Changes in the Education System of Great Britain

THE PLAN OF THE LESSON:

1. Greeting: (SLIDE I)

2. The aims: (SLIDE II)

The aims of today’s lesson are the following:

  • to prove the importance of education;
  • to revise the key vocabulary of education;
  • to practice reading for information in order to compare and contrast the British Education System of the 1950s and the British System of Education today;
  • to listen to a radio programme about education and participate in a class discussion;

3. Warm-up: (SLIDE III)

Read the quotation on the screen. If education really makes us what we are, it is obvious that no one can deny the importance of education in our life. For centuries progressive people struggled for the right to education for everyone. Nowadays this right is guaranteed by law in most countries. However, some people are concerned about the real effectiveness of education and it has become a debatable issue in modern society. Could you explain why so much importance is paid to education and its improvement?

Summing up (SLIDE IV: animation), the quality of a country’s future life, commercially, industrially and intellectually, depends on the quality of its education system.

4. The key vocabulary:

We live in the changing world. That’s why education is constantly changing as well. I suggest having a glance at Britain’s history of Education as it had many different faces. The past years have seen a lot of changes in Britain’s traditional education system.

Before reading for information we should revise the key vocabulary of education. Match the words (SLIDE V) to their definitions (Приложениe 1).

5. Reading:

I suppose now you are ready to start reading the text (Приложение 2) which provides some information on the British Education System in the 1950s and in 2010 (SLIDE VI). Read the text to yourself. Then work in pairs in order to make a comparison using the following criteria (SLIDE VII, Приложение 3). Get ready to comment on the changes which you will notice saying if you find them beneficial or not.

6. Speaking:

Have you noticed any changes? What can you say about them?

Students start describing the changes making a comparison and some comments on them. The teacher adds some information about the changes using the slides.

  • The school leaving age – Student 1 (SLIDEVIII)
  • Comprehensive schools – Student 2 (SLIDE IX)
  • The way of teaching boys and girls – Student 3 (SLIDE X)
  • The curriculum, the amount of homework – Student 4 (SLIDE XI)
  • The average class size – Student 5
  • Accessibility of university – Student 6
  • Materials, equipment – Student 7 (SLIDE XII)
  • Discipline – Student 8 (SLIDE XIII)

Talkback: I would like one of you to summarise everything you have said about these fundamental changes to the British Education System. Are they changes for the better? (Student 1: a summary)

Thus British education has changed dramatically and we can say that (SLIDE XIV) it is on the way to the school of the future.

7. Listening:

Laser FCE: Student’s Book: Ex. B p. 170 (Приложение 4).

Let’s listen to a radio programme about an amazing experiment on education. A group of fourteen-year-old students was put through a 1950s-style education in order to find out what they thought of those methods of teaching.

Listen to the programme and decide which choice is the correct answer. (Try to make some notes so as to mark the evidence.)

8. Homework:

Education has many aspects but in the middle of the lesson we brought up the matter of discipline at school which is quite controversial today. I expect you to write an opinion essay on the next issue. (SLIDE XV)
