The aim of the lesson: by the end of the series of lessons pupils will be able to discuss the jobs and their future careers from different points of view:

– finding out criteria for the division and factors for choosing jobs;
– getting job interview;
– learning famous people’s sayings about job;
– doing grammar and vocabulary exercises.

Equipment: cards “Professions” multi-media presentation “Job. Choosing a Career”, hand-outs, student’s book

1. Warming up:

a) listen to the child’s song and choose the professions mentioned in it , work with the list of jobs (hand-outs)

– engeneer etc.

b) Now let’s revise some professions and some traits of character due to their word-formation:

noun-forming suffixes( jobs)

-(c)ian physician, musician, politician, librarian
-ist Dentist, scientist
-er Designer, cashier, teacher, driver, farmer, programmer
-or Doctor, conductor, tailor
-ant accountant

- adjective-forming suffixes( traits of character)

-al Practical, rational
-ive Communicative, creative, imafinative
-ic Artistic
-ful Helpful
-ous Sociable,reliable, responsible

composition of words

-Man/woman/wife Postman, policeman, fireman, businessman, housewife
-player Tennis-player etc
-maker Shoemaker, dressmaker, lacemaker, glovemaker
-worker Construction worker, office worker
-person businessperson

2. Main part:

c) We know a lot of professions, but how to divide them. Let’s use such criteria for the division:

– manual(physical)/ mental( intellectual)

– well-paid/ low-paid

– rare/ widespread

– up-to-date/ out-of-date

Choose the professions from the list in your hand-outs in ex.1, work in 4 groups:

Postman, policeman, fireman, businessman, housewife,

a photographer, a head-teacher, a servant, a surgeon, an English teacher, a conductor, a bus driver, a hunter, a bricklayer, a tailor, a tennis-player , a shoemaker, a construction worker,an office worker a dressmaker, a judge, a lacemaker, a lawyer, a weaver, a shop-assistant, a pharmacist a manager, a fashion-designer, a candlemaker, a glovemaker,a businessperson,an accountant, a litter-man, a computer programmer, an architect, a hair-dresser, a nurse, a vet, a baker, an astrologer, an engineer, a dentist, a politician, a musician, a scientist, a cashier, a physician.

d) All this jobs can be divided into

Prestigious Non-prestigious
Well-paid

Up-to-date

Rare

mental

Low-paid

Out-of-date(?)

Widespread

manual

What are their features? (Ss tell the features and the T show the slide). Give the e.g.

e) We’ve got lots of quotations( sayings) about work. Read them, try to understand . Which do you like best? It’s ex 2 in your hand-outs:

– Real success is finding your lifework in the work that you love. (David McCullough)

– When your work speaks for itself, don’t interrupt. (Henry J. Kaiser)

I enjoy the last saying, because it never mind if our work is well– or low-paid, up– or out-of-date, it saves us in different situations.

f) The world of work is rich. We’ve revised the names of professions. Look through the list of definitions and try to guess the profession.

Work in pairs. I’ll give you some time.

j) Now let’s practice the job interview. At the comprehension lesson they’ve prepared the dialogue “Getting a job interview” at home. The questions to observe:

  1. Personal information (name, age, education, main characteristics)
  2. bad habits, health problems
  3. job you want to get etc. using questions:
What’s your name?

How old are you?

Where do you study?

What are your main characteristics?

What are you going to be? What job do you want to get?

Have you got any bad habits?

What health problems have you got?

k) Let’s have some grammar at last. Article a/an, no article, the in different situations:

Read and add articles where and what necessary:

Look through the table and compare the factors that were chosen by the group of British teenagers and your choice.
