Short scenes dealing with customs and traditions of St. Valentine’s Day.

The 1st scene

The 1st student: Do you like these beautiful valentines?

The 2nd student: They are wonderful! I can not but admire them. They are specially made for St. Valentine’s Day, which is celebrated in the USA and Britain on the 14th of February.

1st: And do you know the origin of St. Valentine’s Day?

2nd: No one really knows the actual origin of this holiday. Many historians, however, connect it with an ancient Roman festival, which was held on the 14th of February.

1st: If only we could travel into the past…

2nd: But we can do it with the help of the magic wand! The imaginary machine will take us into the depth of the centuries.

1st: Oh, it will be great!

2nd: A wave of our magic wand and we are in the beginning of the 14th century.

1st: Oh, who are those two men?

2nd: I have no ideas. Let’s listen to them and we will guess.

The 2nd scene

Principle characters: the Roman Emperor Claudius II, St. Valentine (a priest).

Claudius: Valentine! You will be put into prison and executed!

Valentine: What for? I am not guilty!

Claudius: But you are guilty! You married young couples against my orders. Did you do it?

Valentine: Yes, but in my opinion, the joy of living is found in love. Only love and friendship can unite people.

Claudius: Stop it! I need a strong and powerful army to conquer new lands and countries. I believe that single young men can be better soldiers. You disobeyed me that is why you will be put into prison and executed!

The 3d scene

Principle characters: the 1st and the 2nd students, Valentine (a priest).

1st: An honourable man with a kind heart. But I know that there was another Valentine, who was a good friend to children. But we’d better wave a wand. Can you see a man?

2nd: Yes, but if I am not mistaken, he is also imprisoned. Let’s ask him why.

1st: Who are you?

Valentine: I am a priest, my name is Valentine.

2nd: But why are you in prison?

Valentine: The fact is, I didn’t worship the gods decreed by the emperor. And in no time I’ll be executed.

The 1st and the 2nd together: Oh, we are awfully sorry for you!

Valentine: Don’t be sorry for me. I am happy, because I have a lot of friends and my dear friends miss me greatly and don’t forget me. You see, I have got a lot of loving notes.

1st: Let me have a look at them. How beautifully they are decorated/ (Poem “I have a little Valentine”, greetings). I see, absence makes the heart grow………….

2nd: Probably, that is the reason of why sweethearts exchange loving notes on this day.

1st: For sure.

2nd: I heard that some people connect the celebrating of St. Valentine’s Day with an old English belief that birds choose their mates on this day.

1st: And others believe that the word “valentine” comes from a norman word “galatine” that means “a lover”.

2nd: Whatever the origin is, St. Valentine’s Day is celebrated in many parts of the world – sweethearts exchange valentines on this day.

1st: Oh, have a look at that nice boy. Do you know who he is?

2nd: I suppose, he is the Cupid – the sun of a beautiful goddess Venus. He is a merry little god, who likes to see people happy.

1st (addressing the Cupid): What do you have in your hand, my boy?

The Cupid: A bow with gold tipped arrows.

The students: What do you need them for?

The Cupid: I go round shooting gold-tipped arrows into the hearts of humans and they fall in love

2nd: It sounds great! Then you are a symbol of love!

The teacher: Now we know something about St.Valentine’s Day. Why not to organize a competition and find out what our friends learn about the holiday.

Two teams are formed. Students make up a valentine card and become the members of the team (the cards were cut in pieces beforehand).

Teacher: Make up a Valentine card, read the name of your team and recite the poems, written in your cards.

The teams are offered two boxes with Valentine symbols: an angel, a heart, a mitten, a fan, a ribbon, a coin, a ring. They are to say: “A ring means that you will be married”
