Target group: students of class 9.

Lesson objectives:
Students will

  1. be prepared for international travel
  2. be able to use different strategies in conversation with a stranger
  3. be able to discuss their travel expressions
  4. be able to check their progress in reading, grammar, vocabulary trough activities.

Educational objective: pupils will learn interesting facts about places of interest in Australia

Skills development:

  1. Reading for specific information
  2. Talking in typical situations
  3. Negotiating a plan for a tour
  4. Speaking about places

Materials: a map of Australia and New Zealand, pictures, posters.     

Structures

  1. Possessives with superlatives
  2. Superlatives with ordinal numerals
  3. Tag questions(special cases)
  4. Students presenting reports on Australia and New Zealand.

LESSON PLAN

Teacher: Hello children! Nice to meet you. We are going to take trip to Australia and New Zealand. Here three groups of experts and they can take  you around Australia and New Zealand.

Activity 1

Fill in the fact –file in the chosen country and tell the most interesting about it (work in groups).

Groups present their projects. The class chooses the best speakers, the best performers, who get special medals.

Teacher: Your projects were very interesting. Now will see which group knows Australia and New Zealand best.

Brainstorming quiz

Each group is given 4 questions.

Group1.

  1. Who discovered Australia?(James Cook, Christopher Columbus, Rudyard Kipling)
  2. Home to Australian government is (Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra).
  3. What is the biggest lake in Australia?(lake Eyre, lake Todd Loch Ness)
  4. What is the capital of New Zealand? (Melbourne, Wellington, Auckland.

Group2

  1. Whose statue you can see on the beach of Wellington? (dog’s statue, dolphin’s statue, horse’s statue)
  2. What is the national game of New Zealand (football, rugby, tennis)
  3. The national currency of Australia is…( the Australian franc ,Australian dollar, Australian pound)
  4. What bird you can see in the national emblem of New Zealand? (the parrot, the kiwi ,the raven )

Gruop3

  1. Who is the head of government in Australia ?( the Queen , the king ,the Prime Minister)
  2. Australian’s national colours are :( black-red and gold ,white, blue and red , gold, white and bright green )
  3. The oldest university of Australia is situated (in Sydney, in Canberra, in Brisbane )
  4. There are (5 states 2 territories; 7 states 3 territories; 6 states 2 territories) in Australia.

Activity 3

Say try, false or don’t know. If false, correct the statement.

  1. Australia is situated in the Southern Hemisphere.

  4. During the Christmas holidays people sunbath on the beach or surf in the ocean.
