The other day an officer from the Central militia board rang me up and said that they needed young and clever militiamen to work at the Criminal Investigation Department. They have announced a competition to find the best candidates. Let's try to take part in it. Agreed? Everyone who takes part in the competition is to solve a logical problem. One is to find a lost person by logical deduction. You are asked to listen to a part of a telephone conversation, to analyze it and to find out where the lost person can be found.

Tanya: Hallo, Alec!

Alec: Hello, Tanya!

T: What are you going to do after you've finished the school?

A: I'm going to be a worker, a machine operator. My grandfather is a fitter, my father is a turner.

T: Oh, I see. So it runs in the family.

A: What about you?

T: After the secondary specialized school I shall work as a cook.

After this conversation Alec disappeared from home. Where can Alec be found?

P1: So Alec was speaking with Tanya over the telephone.

P2: He said he was going to be a worker, a machine operator, after finishing school.

P3: What do we know about his parents?

P4: His father is a turner.

P1: And his mother?

P2: Who knows:

P3: His mother might be against his being a worker.

P4: What does she want him to do, then?

P3: Say she wanted his to enter an institute, to get a higher education.

P1: Well, if both parents were very hard on him, he could have left home.

P2: Where could he go?

P4: Who else was mentioned in the conversation?

P3: Alec's grandfather.

P2: What is his profession?

P1: He is a fitter.

P2 Oh, then he could help his grandson to find a job as a machine operator at his plant.

P4: So, you think that Alec went to live with his grandfather without saying a word to his parents

P2: That's exactly what I think

P3: OK! Let that be our answer: Alec is at his grandfather's now.

Everybody: Agreed!

We are to have a very important and interesting meeting. Today some of our former pupils are coming to see us. Some of them are outstanding people. They can help you to choose your future profession: they'll advise you where you can go to work or to study. Take the opportunity. Ask our visitors what their professions are; how they chose their professions; how they managed to realize their dreams. Tell them about your plans, ask them for advice.

So our visitors have arrived. Give them a proper welcome. Use this meeting to help you decide on your future profession".

Vera Ivanovna: How do you do, boys and girls. Let me introduce myself to you. I'm Vera Ivanovna Popova, a journalist.

P1: Oh, did you study in our school?

V. I.: Yes, I finished this school 8 years ago.

P2: I want to be a journalist.

V.I.: Have you thought it over well? It's a difficult profession, you know.

P2: Still, you took it up. Well you, please, explain what made you choose to be a journalist?

V.I.: Oh, no. First I worked as a printer at a printing house. And imagine, we became the best printing house in the town.

P2: Why, did you introduce any progressive methods of work?

V.I.: Yes, we did. And it was there that I developed my practical skills. It was only later I realized that journalism interested me most of all.

P3: And I can't choose any suitable professional for my self

P1: I haven't decided what profession to take up either

V.I.: Well, I can tell you only one thing: the opportunities for a young person choosing a profession today are fantastic.

P1: Suppose, I choose a profession. How can I know that I'm well suited for it?

V.I.: There are many ways. Have a talk with your parents, teachers, friends. Research some information in Internet. Try yourself in this trade or profession.

P3: Thank you very much indeed, Vera Ivanovna. This meeting was very interesting and helpful. I think we'll fallow your advice and your example.

V. I.: I wish you good luck!

I'd like to suggest that you test yourselves in a very interesting profession-the profession of bookseller. Have you ever tried to sell books? It is the most interesting job to do. Let's try! So you are booksellers in a bookshop. If you want to make good shop assistant, you must try to sell as many books as possible. To succeed in that you have to read a great deal, to be good at literature. Many customers visit your shop. Everyone wants to choose the most interesting and readable literature. Collect some books which you would like to sell, advertise them and persuade the customers to buy them. As for me, I'll see which of you can be recommended to work as shop assistants at the best bookshop in our city.

Shop assistants, the customers have come. Advertise two or three books and persuade your customers to buy them. The more books you manager to sell, the better.

Customer: Good afternoon. I'd like to buy some books. What would you advice me to buy?

Seller: Glad to see you here. We have got a lot of nice books. But in my opinion, there's nothing like Charles Dickens and his novel " The Pickwick Papers"

C.: Do you think it would interest me?

S.: I think so. This book is known all over the world. It made Charles Dickens famous.

C.: What kind of book is it?

S.: It's very original and funny. And then it is a very useful novel.

C.: Is it?

S.: Yes. It gives one a knowledge of the 19th century England. The author has described the atmosphere of the time with great skill.

C.: All right. You have talked me into taking it. But I need some more books. You know, I am fond of amusing stories for light reading.

S.: Oh, I can offer you an excellent novel thought I can't call it "light reading".

C.: Really? What book is it, I wonder?

S.: "The Gadfly" by Ethel Lillian Voynich.

C.: Well, I'm not sure if this is exactly what I need.

S.: You are wrong, I'm afraid. It's the type of a book that makes people think. Mrs. Voynich produced one of the greatest images of the revolutionary fighter in world literature.

C.: I agree, the novel is very well know and popular. But it makes sad reading.

S.: Tastes differ. There are a lot of serious young people who prefer something sad to amusing and light literature.

C.: I could never understand them. What makes people like books with unhappy endings?

S.: I'll tell you. This is a very truthful story. It gives them a real feeling of what life is like.

C.: All right. Give me this book too.

Учитель: you want to test yourself as teachers? I think I can give you the opportunity. You have to hold a class meeting. The subject of this meeting is teaching art at school. Conduct a discussion. Find out which kind of art your pupils like best of all and why. Listen to different opinions. Explain to you pupils why they should educate themselves as thinking readers or spectators. Advice your pupils to read more books and to see less films, to watch less TV programmes. Make a conclusion and sum up the discussion.

So, the class meeting is about to begin. Teachers, conduct a discussion which will help your pupils to educate themselves in the arts.

T: To begin our discussion I'd like to ask you a question. What do you prefer: to read a book, to see a stage or screen version of this book, or to watch it on TV?

P1: It's not an easy question to answer. I like them all.

P2: I'm a theatre goer. I always enjoy plays if they are well staged.

P3: Why go to the theatre? There are a lot of wonderful film versions. And there is a cinema not far from my home.

P4:I like TV. It's always at hand. And there are no problems with tickets.

T: Do you want to say that you don't like to read books?

P1: No, I didn't mean that. I prefer first to read a book and then to see its stage or screen version.

P2: As for me, I like to read a book after visiting a theatrical performance.

T: If you want to enjoy the arts you must know and understand them.

P4: What must we do to understand and enjoy the arts?

T: What do you think about it?

P4: I think we must read books about the arts.

P1: Taking an active part in amateur art activities is also a great help.

P2: One may become a student of a people's university of culture.

T: You are quite right. Now let's discuss the importance of art in human life.

P4: The best works of art teach people to be kind, truthful and selfless.

T: Well, what do you think that means?

P1: Why, it's easy. A real work of art is enjoyed by many generations of people.

T: Now let me sum up. Art is not only for enjoyment. It educates us and helps to understand many important things in life. It's useful to read books and think. But it's quite useless to watch films and TV programmes for enjoyment only. Use all the opportunities for the cultural development of yourself.
