Group 1. Notting Hill Carnival

Our group had the task to prepare information about Notting Hill Carnival. We used the material  from the sites:  http://en. wikipedia.org/wiki/Notting Hill,  www.interlink-media.ru
Notting Hill Carnival is named after the place where it is usually held. It is a street carnival. 1966 is the starting point of the Carnival. It was the inspiration of black immigrants who started it.
The beginning of the Festival is connected with racially-motivated riots which took place in the Notting Hill area of London over several nights in late August and early September 1958.
The riot started when a gang of white youth attacked a white Swedish woman who was married to a West Indian man.
The Carnival lasts more than three days.  It grew into a huge multicultural arts festival which is attended by more than 2mln people.
Those who take part in Carnival go around the Carnival route about 8 kilometers in the area. The sing Calipso songs, play steel drum music, attract visitors’ attention by wearing shimmering costumes. The procession is followed by troops of dancers.
The essential part of the festival is exotic food from the all parts of the world.

Group 2. St.Patric’s Festival.

Our group has prepared material about St.Patric’s festival which takes place in Ireland. It is Ireland’s greatest national holiday as well as a holy day. The date marks the anniversary of the death of the missionary who became the Patron Saint of Ireland. The day is celebrated with parade speeches, festive dinners and dances. Green is the colour of the day with thousands of little shamrocks worn even by those whose forefathers never touched the shores of Ireland.
It I known that St.Patric was born in Britain to wealthy parents. At the age of 16, Patric was taken prisoner by a group of Irish Raiders who were attacking his family’s estate. They transported him to Ireland where he spent 6 years in captivity. During this time he worked as a shepherd.  Later he turned to his religion becoming a devout Christian. I’d like to underline that the first parade took place not in Ireland but in the USA.The main purpose of St.Patric’s Festival is to develop International festival around the  national holiday. It was set out to reflect the talents and achievements of Irish people.

Teacher: What additional information would you like to get?
– Could you tell me the number of participants? (Yes.  Of course. The number of participants is not registered exactly)

Group 3 Holi    http://encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/

Our group would like to tell about Holi, spring festival which is connected with wheat harvest and is celebrated for two days. According to a legend which explains the origin of the festival once there lived a powerful devil. He was very egoistic and forbade everyone to pray the God or even take the name of the God. But his son didn’t obey his father’s order. That’s why his angry father sentenced young prince to death. He ordered Holica who was a female demon and who claimed she was fireproof to take a young man on her lap and sit on a fire. Holica was burnt but the young prince survived. Holi is a festival of colour and is celebrated all over India. It is also celebrated by Indians   residing out of India The Festival brings new hopes for all the people.  Everywhere people – young and old are drenched with different colours and water. People in small groups are seen singing, dancing and throwing colors at each other.
The purpose of this festival is to show the triumph of virtue and religion over evil. That’s why while celebrating people make an effigy, arrange a fire and burn it. On this day people pay and forgive debts, stop quarreling and wish each other good luck.

Teacher: Are there any questions?
– I’d like to know what food they eat. (Indians make a lot of cookeries and eat a lot of fruit)
Teacher: You have 2 minutes to fill in the form

Group 4 “Shrovetide”

With great pleasure we would like to tell about one of the Russian Festivals, Shrovetide. It is an ancient festival dating back to pagan times. At first it was a festival dedicated to the God Volos to celebrate the arrival of spring and the start of work on land. The festival, originating in people’s worship of nature included various rituals (burning of a straw effigy of winter, lightning of fires, troika-riding.  Later the Orthodox Church included Shrovetide into the list of its own Festivals. Shrovetide lost its ritual significance and became a purely symbolic festival of seeing off winter and welcoming spring. The most important moment of the festival is burning of a straw effigy. People made a big fire, gave a pancake to the effigy named Maslenitsa and then burnt it.  Besides it was a good tradition to throw blinis into the fire. The festival lasts a week. Each day of the celebration has its name and meaning. The purposes of the festival which is not only a Russian holiday is to leave troubles, to forgive debts and to wish happiness.

Teacher: What additional information would you like to get?
– Could you tell me please why people threw blinis into the fire?  (It was a part of ritual and meant donation to the Godness of Fertility)
Teacher: You have 2 minutes to fill in the form.

Teacher: Will you pass me your cards for checking?
And the next question for you:
– What common features do these festivals have? (Students’ answers)
1) They all denote transitional periods: from summer to autumn – Notting Hill Carnival, from winter to spring – Holi, Shrovetide  and St.Patric’s.
2) All festivals are accompanied by funny costumes, colorfullness, singing, dancing and tasty eating.

5. Relaxation.   Before starting the practical stage of our work I suggest you to have a rest.
I’m sure that a perfect way of having a rest is listing the pages of your class album.
