Teacher: Good afternoon, dear children! Good afternoon, dear guests! Glad to see you at our Christmas Quiz. Let me introduce myself. I’m elf.

Pupils: Hello, Elf!

Teacher: I help to Santa Claus in his toyshop. And I’m here because everybody is surprised. It’s Christmas now but you don’t have a decorated Christmas tree. It’s terrible!!! I have the Christmas tree, but it is not decorated. Can you help me to decorate it?

Pupils: Yes, we can.

Teacher: I have 3 boxes with decorations from Santa Claus. But you can take them if you only do the tasks. Are you ready?

Pupils: Go ahead!

Teacher: But we have a problem… Santa Claus can’t speak Russian, he can speak only English. So the tasks are in English. Can you speak English?

Pupils: Yes, of course.

Teacher: I see three groups of you. Who are you? Have you got any names? Captains, introduce your teams.

Капитаны представляют свои команды.

Teacher: Well, I hope you will win and our guests will help you. Let’s start and at first I have a question to you: “What do you know about Christmas?”

Pupils: We know that Christmas is a favourite holiday for English people, especially for children.

Christmas is a religious holiday to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

I think Christmas is a family holiday.

Families gather for traditional Christmas dinner.

They exchange presents and congratulate each other.

People decorate Christmas tree and their houses.

People send Christmas cards to their relatives and friends.

Teacher: But what is this holiday from? You have a puzzle. It helps you to tell the history of Christmas.

Teacher: This is а traditional “Christmas tree”. There are a lot of symbols and things connected with this holiday. Do you know them? I have some cards with pictures and some cards with words, but they are mixed. Match them. I give you some of them and you exchange them between the teams using the question “Who has...?”

Команда, набравшая большее количество карточек, вешает на елку свою игрушку.

Teacher: English people often send greeting cards to their friends and relatives to wish “Merry Christmas”. And have you got any Christmas cards?

Pupils: Yes, we have prepared some.

Конкурс открыток (домашняя заготовка)

Победившая команда вешает на елку свою игрушку.

Teacher: There is a tradition of hanging Christmas stockings at the bed or at the fireplace. On the eve of Christmas Santa Claus visits each home sliding down chimneys and puts any gifts into the stockings. The most popular things he puts are tangerines or nuts for good children and a piece of coal for not so good children. Let’s look into our stockings at the fireplace. Oh, Santa couldn’t decide what children were you, so he gave you the task: “They say if you know how a person spends his day you know what kind of person he is”. Santa wanted to know how you spend your day and he sent some questions, but some words of these questions have been lost. Please find these words and answer Santa’s questions.

Questions:

  • …will be the first? (Who)
  • …does your day begin? (When)
  • …do you get up early in the morning? (Why)
  • …do you usually have for breakfast? (What)
  • …classes do you have on Friday? (How many)
  • …do you often go after school? (Where)
  • …does your day finish? (How)

Победившая команда вешает на елку свою игрушку.

Teacher: Let’s look into another Christmas stocking. It says: if you can count you can get to know why people like holidays.

Teacher: There are some rebuses in the next stockings. If you do it you will know what presents Santa Claus brings for English children. Write the words.

Победившая команда вешает на елку свою игрушку.

Teacher: Children usually write letters about his presents to Santa. Have you done it?

Pupils: No, we haven’t.

Teacher: Well, let’s do it right now. But we shan’t write our letters we’ll say them.

But don’t forget Santa Claus can’t speak Russian, so you should speak English. And if you don’t know how to say something – imitate it.

Победившая команда вешает на елку свою игрушку.

Teacher: English children write letters to Santa to get a present and what do Russian children do?

Pupils: We tell poems and sing songs.

Teacher: Do you know any poems about Christmas?

Pupils:

Oh! Christmas Tree

Oh! Christmas Tree, all candy caned,
all green, all glowing bright.
Oh! Christmas tree all tinseled, rained,
all dressed in colored light.
Oh! Christmas Tree an angel stands,
she guards above each bough.
She smiles o'er your rainbow dress
and knows that even, now.
The gifts, the wrappings about your feet,
those presents on the floor.
Are but, the simple actions of
our love and nothing more.
Just some sweet, kind, thoughtfulness,
at this His time of year.
To show you, our angel and our God
His love is living here.

Holy is the Night

Holy is the night.
Blessed the starlight.
Chaste the falling snow.
Christ is all aglow.

Snowflakes

Snowflakes spill from heaven's hand
Lovely and chaste like smooth white sand.
A veil of wonder laced in light
Falling Gently on a winter's night.
Graceful beauty raining down
Giving magic to the lifeless round.
Each snowflake, a falling star
Smiling beauty that is spun afar.
Snowflakes spill from heaven's hand
Lovely and chaste like smooth white sand.
Till earth is dressed in a robe of white
Unspoken poem the hush of night.

Победившая команда вешает на елку свою игрушку.

Teacher: And now let’s sing a happy song. I think you know it. Sing and act out what you hear.

“If you are happy”

If you are happy and you know it
Clap your hands
If you are happy and you know it
Clap your hands
If you are happy and you know it
And you really want to show it
If you are happy and you know it
Clap your hands.
If you are happy and you know it
Snap your fingers
If you are happy and you know it
Snap your fingers
If you are happy and you know it
And you really want to show it
If you are happy and you know it
Snap your fingers
If you are happy and you know it
Stamp your feet
If you are happy and you know it
Stamp your feet
If you are happy and you know it
And you really want to show it
If you are happy and you know it
Stamp your feet
If you are happy and you know it
Say: "O.K."
If you are happy and you know it
Say: "O.K."
If you are happy and you know it
And you really want to show it
If you are happy and you know it
Say: "O.K."
If you are happy and you know it
Do all five
If you are happy and you know it
Do all five
If you are happy and you know it
And you really want to show it
If you are happy and you know it
Do all five

Teacher: Santa Claus has a lot of names: in Britain he is Father Christmas, in America he is Kriss Kringle. Не is an old man. Не wears red clothes and long white beard. Everybody thinks that he lives in the North Pole. And the whole year he makes toys for children with the help of his elves.

People think that he is a happy man and he always says “Ho, ho, ho”. He drives a sledge pulled by flying reindeer. Do you know the names of Santa’s reindeer? I have their photo, but I don’t remember who is who. Try to do it! Look at the reindeer and their names and match them.

Победившая команда вешает на елку свою игрушку.

Teacher: What’s the name of the favourite Santa’s reindeer?

Pupils: Rudolph.

Teacher: Why is he absent in the photo? Do you know? Не lost his way. He can’t come home.

Captains! Help him!

Teacher: Every year there are more and more presents and gifts for children and it’s difficult for Santa’s reindeer. Let’s give more reindeer for Santa as our present. Draw the reindeer and think out his name. But you should do it with your eyes closed.

Teacher: People think that Christmas is the time of fun and presents. They usually celebrate Christmas at home with their relatives and friends. They eat special food and have a lot of fun. In England people make Christmas pudding before Christmas. Everyone in family stirs the pudding and makes a wish. It’s a traditional meal, which people cook for Christmas party. When the pudding is hot they put 5-penny pieces in it, and sometimes a little silver horseshoe, a button and a ring. If you find a button in your piece of pudding you will be rich, a horseshoe means happiness and good luck, a ring - marriage.

The 26th December – Boxing Day is an extra holiday after Christmas. This day people usually give and receive presents. This is time to visit friends and relatives or to sit at home and watch football.

And we have the last Christmas stocking from Santa.

Pupils: What is the task?

Teacher: Santa asks to find Christmas words in this strange box with a lot of letters. Let’s try!

Слова:

CHIMNEY JINGLE BELLS SNOW SLEIGH
HOLIDAY DECEMBER TREE ELVES
REINDEER STOCKING TOYS SANTA
RUDOLPH LETTER STAR

Teacher: And also we have a task for our guests. It’s a Christmas crossword. Get a bauble for your favourite team!

<Рисунок 8>

Teacher: That’s all our Christmas tree is decorated. Let’s count! How many baubles do we have in our Christmas tree?

Определяется победитель.

Teacher: There is one more wonderful Christmas tradition. People go along the streets and sing Christmas songs – Carols. Let’s sing the most favourite song of the Englishmen. Do you know what it is?
