Pupil 1: We are glad to welcome you at our party! It is quite unusual today because it’s devoted to our great friends – dogs. Look at the motto of our party:

If you want a friend in town, get a dog.”
Harry Truman

Pupil 2: To most people the words man’s best friend refer to only one animal in the world – the dog. If you have a dog you know it is true. Dogs are faithful and loyal friends. They make fine pets and companions. They guard their masters, entertain them and even save their lives. And they have always been hard workers and helped people much.

Pupil 1: Our friendship with dogs started back somewhere in the Stone Age. Like men, dogs in those days had to hunt other animals to eat. Then one day, a smart dog understood that it was easier to follow man. The man didn’t mind this because the barking of the dog warned him of any danger.
Let’s watch the scene about how dogs started to live with men.
(Children perform the scene “Why the Dog lives with the Man”)

Why the Dog Lives with the Man
Characters: Boy, Dog, Hare, Wolf, Bear, Man.
Boy: Many years ago the Dog lived in the forest all alone. Soon he felt that he was not happy.
Dog: I do not want to live alone. I must have a friend.
Boy: Next day in the morning the Dog met the Hare.
Dog: Good morning, dear Hare. Glad to see you. Let us live together. I don’t like to live all alone.
Hare: Good. Let’s live together.
Boy: So they began to live together.
(At night the Dog began to bark)
Hare: Don’t bark, Dog. The Wolf may come and eat us up.
Dog (to himself): The Hare is afraid. I don’t want to live with him. (And he went away.)
Boy: Next day the Dog met the Wolf.
Dog: Good morning, dear Wolf. Let us live together. I don’t like to live all alone.
Wolf: Good. Let’s live together.
Boy: So they began to live together.
(At night the Dog began to bark.)
Wolf: Don’t bark, Dog. The Bear may come and eat us up.
Dog (to himself): The Wolf is afraid. I don’t want to live with him. (And he went away.)
Boy: Next day the Dog met the Bear.
Dog: Good morning, dear Bear. Glad to see you. Let us live together. I don’t like to live all alone.
Bear: Good. Let us live together.
Boy: So they began to live together.
(At night the Dog began to bark again.)
Bear: Don’t bark, Dog. The Man may come.
Dog (to himself): The Bear is afraid. I don’t want to live with him. (And he went away.)
Boy: Next day the Dog met the Man.
Dog: Good morning, Man. Glad to see you. Let us live together. I don’t like to live all alone.
Man: Good. Let us live together.
Boy: And they began to live together. They hunted together at the day-time and slept at night.
(At night the Dog began to bark again.)
Man: Go on barking, Dog. The Bear or the Wolf may come near us but they will be afraid and they will run away.
Dog (to himself): The Man is not afraid. I shall stay with him.
Boy: From that time the dog and the Man lived together.

Pupil 2: Time went and gradually, the dog became more and more important in the life of man who took the dog to hunt. Then dogs were trained to watch over the sheep and other domestic animals and to guard the house. Cave paintings over 50,000years old show hunters in action with their faithful dogs at their side.
Men began to tell stories, write poems about dogs and paint pictures. Now it’s time to listen to some poems about these faithful animals.
(Children recite poems about dogs which they have learned before.)

MY DOG
He sits and begs; he gives a paw
He is as you can see
The finest dog you ever saw
And he belongs to me.
He follows everywhere I go
And even when I swim
I laugh because he thinks, you know,
That I belong to him.

MY PET DOG
I have a little pet dog Sam,
He is as humble as a lamb;
I like his whiskers curling fine,
A set of teeth all in a line.
Each day I take him for a walk,
And as we go, we have a talk
About the sun, the moon and stars,
About the sky and planet Mars.

OUR PUPPIES
See them trotting round the town,
Puppies black, and white, and brown,
Some of them have coats of grey,
You can see them any day,
Trotting round the town,
Trotting round the town.

MY PUPPY
My puppy is brown and full of fun,
I love to see him jump and run.
He barks and dashes here and there
As though he likes things everywhere.

 MY DOG
I’ll never hurt my little dog,
But stroke and pat his head;
I like to see him wag his tail
I like to see him fed.
No, I shall never hurt my dog
And never treat him ill
But treat him kindly every day
And he will love me still.

WHY DID IT BARK?
He didn’t bark at anything –
a cat,
a dog,
a piece of string,
a siren or a silly toad,
a pick-up truck along the road,
a fence,
a bone,
a chewed-up shoe –
He barked because he wanted to.
Myra Cohn Livingston

FOUR FEET
I have done mostly what most men do
And pushed it out of my mind;
But I can’t forget if I wanted to
Four feet trotting behind.
Day after day, the whole day through
Whatever my road inclined
Four feet said “I’m coming with you”
And trotted along behind.
Rudyard Kipling

Pupil 1: In cultures from Africa and Melanesia to Siberia and America dogs and related wild species such as coyotes, jackals, dingoes were often heroes – intelligent, resourceful and helpful to mankind. Dogs were the first animals that could be tamed and trained by people. Later on people began to breed dogs. But it is universally known that the ancestor of the dog is a wolf. Let’s watch the scene about the dog and the wolf.
(Children perform a scene “The Dog and the Wolf”)

The Dog and the Wolf
Characters: Dog, Wolf
Wolf: Hello, Dog!
Dog: Hello, Wolf!
Wolf: You look well and you are so fat. Tell me, please, how you manage to live better than I do? I look for food from morning till night and still I go to bed very hungry.
Dog: Oh, I live happily in the village.
My master is very king. He gives me food and drink. I have a warm kennel in the yard. For this I guard his house from thieves, it is quite easy.
Wolf: Oh, I would like to live like that. You are so happy!
Dog: if you go to the village with me and do the same, you will live as comfortable as I do.
Wolf: oh, nice! I would love to go with you.
Dog; then come along!
(The dog and the Wolf start to the village. On the way they decide to have a rest.)
Wolf: Oh, Dog, I’m so tired and hungry. Let’s stop and have a rest.
Dog: I am tired as well and I’m so hot.
(The Dog lies down beside the wolf and the wolf notices the collar on Dog’s neck and the chain.)
Wolf: Oh, my friend, what is it? Do you wear a collar and a chain? And I see a bear place on your neck. What’s the matter?
Dog: Oh, that’s nothing. You see my master ties me up, and keeps me on this chain during the night.
Wolf: No, thank you. I’m not going with you. I’m going to the forest. I shall change my freedom for good food. It’s better to suffer from hunger and cold than to wear a collar. Keep your happiness to yourself. But I want to be free. Good bye!

Pupil 2: Many nice words could be said to praise different dogs. We can also try to make our

Pupil 2: And now time for games. We will make two teams of four members in each team. We have got some cards with adjectives describing dog’s behaviour in different situations. In turn each team takes a card, reads it aloud and listens to some piece of music. After that the members of the team should act out the dog’s behavior to the music.

A happy dog A sad dog
A lazy dog A crazy dog
A curious dog A hungry dog
A peaceful dog An angry dog

Pupil 2: Now it’s time for fun. Try to guess the riddle.

Two legs sat upon three legs
With one leg in his lap
In comes four legs
And runs away with one leg
Up jumps two legs
Catches up three legs,
Throws it after four legs
And makes him bring back one leg.

Listen to the Russian version of this rhyme:
Две ноги на трёх ногах,
А четвёртая в зубах.
Вдруг четыре прибежали
И с одною убежали.
Подскочили две ноги,
Ухватили три ноги,
Закричали на весь дом –
Да тремя по четырём!
Но четыре завизжали
И с одною убежали.
(Перевод К.Чуковского)

Pupil 1: Today dogs are divided into different groups and each group is specially bred to serve man in a different way. As you know at first dogs were used by man as hunters and guards. Later they were taught otherprofessions”.  We know that dogs are used to rescue people, to help the blind, to baby-sit, to track criminals. These clever animals were used during the war time. Dogs are perfect performers – they are excellent circus actors and film stars.  Dogs are even trained by man to look for mushrooms and, of course, they are kept as pets. Now it’s time to listen to the song and say why the man wanted to buy a dog.

HOW MUCH IS THE DOG IN THE WINDOW?
How much is that dog in the window?
The one with the waggly tail
How much is that dog in the window?
I do hope the dog is for sale.
I must take a trip to California
And leave my poor sweetheart alone
If she has a dog she won’t be lonely
And dog will help her in the home.
How much is that dog in the window?
The one with the waggly tail
How much is that dog in the window?
I do hope the dog is for sale.
I’ve read in the paper there’re robbers
With flashlights that shine in the dark
If she has a dog it can protect her
And scare them away with one bark.
How much is that dog in the window?
The one with the waggly tail
How much is that dog in the window?
I do hope the dog is for sale.
(Pupils answer the question.
P1: The man wanted to buy a dog to protect his sweetheart.
P2: The man wanted his sweetheart not to be lonely.
P3: The man wanted to buy a guard for his sweetheart’s home.)
Pupil 2: Thank you, you’ve guessed right. I think you liked the song as well. Now you will have one more task to do. Look at the pictures showing dogs doing different things and name the dog’s “profession”.
(Children look at some pictures and name the dog’s “profession”)

Pupil 2: People have a variety of reasons for choosing a particular name for their dog. Some dogs are named after famous people, favourite places, or things. Others are named for their colours or physical characteristics. Some names are just plain and silly. Below are some of the most common dog names, according to Dog Fancy Magazine.

Brandy       Buddy         Lady          Teddy
Ginger        Missy          Spot           Buster
Gypsy         Misty          Sam            Rex
Max            Muffy         Shadow

Pupil 1: Lots and lots of dogs are now kept as pets throughout the world. Some of our pupils are among the dog owners too. And they want to tell us about their beloved pets.
(Two pupils tell short stories about their dogs.)
Boy: My family has got a Yorkshire terrier. His name is Jack. He is five years old now. When he was a little puppy, Jack was curious and funny. Now Jack is extremely lively, clever and loyal. He can do many funny tricks, and he can “talk” with his tail. Of all the members of my family Jack likes Mother best. I have learned that long-coated, silky-haired “Yorkies” were named for the English county of Yorkshire. They have been around since about 1860, when they were bred to control mice and rats in the mills and mines. However, they soon became popular as pets.

Girl: We have got a dachshund. Her name is Bessy and she is eight years old. Her coat is ginger, her eyes are large brown and very clever. Bessy is a grown-up dog, though she is not very big. She has already born some beautiful puppies and proved to be a good mother. Bessy is very sympathetic and loyal friend. My sister and I like to play and walk in the park with our Bessy. In summer we often take her to our summer cottage in the village. It’s the greatest time for Bessy. I have read that this short-legged, long-bodied, quick-moving breed has been around since the 15th century. Dachshund means “badger-hound” in German.

Pupil 2: Now we are ready to say “thank you” to dogs for being faithful, brave, loyal and cheerful.
Pupil 2: And we are proud to have such devoted friends and tireless helpers near us.
